Saint Nicholas of Myra
270AD to 343AD
Saint Nicholas, who was also called Nikolaos of Myra, was a historic
4th-century Christian saint. Many miracles were attributed to this man
but he is most famous for his habit of giving gifts in secret. The legend
of Saint Nicholas gave way to a modern intepretation found in Santa
Claus which comes from the Dutch name for Saint Nicholas: Sinterk-
laas.
Saint Nicholas was born in what is now modern-day Turkey and served
there as a Greek bishop just a few hundred years after Jesus’ death.
He was present at the Council of Nicaea and was one of the bishops
who signed the Nicene Creed.
In his most famous act of kindness
- Nicholas aided a poor man who
had three daughters, but could not
afford a proper dowry for them.
This meant that they would remain
unmarried and probably, in absence
of any other possible employment,
would have to become prostitutes.
Hearing of the girls’ plight, Nicholas
decided to help them, but being too
modest to help the family in public
(or to save them the humiliation
of accepting charity), he went to
the house under the cover of night
and threw three purses (one for
each daughter) filled with gold coins By Bjoertvedt (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0 (https://
