UNIVERSITY OF PHILIPPINES World Rank: 918 RANK 982 1,690 2,363 673

The research efforts of DLSU are underscored in the July 2011 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities conducted by the Cybometrics Lab, a research group of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas. CSIC is the largest public research body in Spain. Spains Webometrics of university rankings offers a comprehensive approach in ranking higher educational institutions. Aside from research output, it also considers other indicators which reflect the global quality of education and academic prestige of universities. Webometrics primarily targets electronic access to scientific publications and to other academic material. Web indicators are very useful for ranking purposes as they are not based on the number of visits or page design, but on the global performance and visibility of the universities. Out of 12,000 universities evaluated, UP Diliman was rated 918th in the world. DLSUs world ranking was 2,096th while Ateneo was at 2,525th. Webometrics indicators: Size (S). Number of pages recovered from four engines: Google, Yahoo, Live Search and Exalead. For each engine, results are log-normalized to 1 for the highest value. Then for each domain, maximum and minimum results are excluded and every institution is assigned a rank according to the combined sum. Visibility (V). The total number of unique external links received (inlinks) by a site can be only confidently obtained from Yahoo Search. Results are log-normalized to 1 for the highest value and then combined to generate the rank. Rich Files (R). After evaluation of their relevance to academic and publication activities and considering the volume of the different file formats, the following were selected: Adobe Acrobat (.pdf), Adobe PostScript (.ps), Microsoft Word (.doc) and Microsoft Powerpoint (.ppt). These data were extracted using Google and merging the results for each filetype after log-normalizing in the same way as described before. Scholar (Sc). Google Scholar provides the number of papers and citations for each academic domain. These results from the Scholar database represent papers, reports and other academic items. The four ranks were combined according to a formula where each one has a different weight: Visibility (external inlinks) Size (web pages) Rich files Scholar 50% 20% 15% 15%

Breakthrough study on the Centennial Tree

UniverSity feLLow Dr. conSoLacion ragaSa of the coLLege of Science conDUcteD the first-ever reported
thorough study on the various parts of the DLSU Centennial Tree, also known as Bito-on. Ragasa studied several parts of the Bito-on tree, which carries the scientific name Barringtonia asiatica. She discovered valuable information such as anti-inflammatory and cytotoxicity characteristics which are significant in the defense against certain diseases such as cancer. Her analysis led to the development of five posters on various aspects of the tree. The topics of the five posters are as follows: Previous Studies on Barringtonia asiatica, Chemical Constituents of Barringtonia asiatica: leaves, fruits, seeds (published in the Chemical & Pharmaceutical Bulletin - June 2011 issue), Chemical Constituents of Barringtonia asiatica: bark, root, flowers (acceptable for publication in Natural Product Research), Bioactivities of Compounds from Barringtonia asiatica (submitted for publication to the Philippine Agricultural Scientist), and Reported Bioactivities of Compounds from Barringtonia asiatica.
