REFLECTION

Read and answer the questions below. Answer them in no less than three (3) sentences.

1. Why was Rizal sent abroad? What are the reasons?

Rizal made the decision to study abroad for both personal and charitable reasons. In order
to treat her mother's eye condition, he wanted to specialize in eyes. In order to aid his
fellow compatriots, he also wanted to learn about the cultures, legal systems, and
governments of other European nations.

2. What were the challenges Rizal faced in his life and studies abroad?

Jose Rizal must set aside money for his everyday needs. He only purchases what he actually
needs, saving some money for books and other wishes. He must learn the native tongue of
the places he visited. Languages varied in Spain, France, Japan, Hong Kong, and Germany.

3. Describe the places Rizal visited and briefly discuss what happened there. What is the
impact of these places to him?

Rizal, as a traveler in different places/countries like Madrid, Germany, Italy, Hongkong etc.
was much more than just a bystander; he was keenly aware of how others lived. His diary
entries, in which he recorded his observations of culture and other things, made this clear.
Rizal was able to survive in a nation that was not his own. He was able to control his
expenses and make savings. He also works during his free time to make money. Rizal
encountered many individuals while traveling, not just regular people but even
professionals like academics and doctors. He was a shrewd traveler as well because he
picked up the language of the place he was staying. This improved his ability to
communicate.

4. Describe Rizal’s lovers and how did his love life evolve? How did it affect his young
adult life?

As befitting a man of Rizal's statue, all of Rizal's lovers were attractive, from respectable
families, or had other notable qualities. In the Philippines and abroad, Rizal encountered his
lovers, who nearly persuaded him to give up his mission to free his oppressed people. These
encounters had an impact on his early adult life because they kept him cheerful during his
darkest moments, helped him develop as a person, and equipped him to face the challenges
of life.
