Procedure of Benchmarking
Purpose:
The purpose of this procedure is setting of targets which allow the organization to improve
standards and to benchmark the organization’s performance against others within the same
business sector.
Definitions:
Benchmarking: Benchmarking is the comparison of an organization’s performance to others
within the sector or country as a whole. Benchmarking can also be carried out between sites
within the same organization to identify strengths and weaknesses and therefore develop
improvement plans.
Organization: Company, corporation, firm, enterprise, authority or institution, or part or combination
thereof, whether incorporated or not, public or private, that has its own functions and administration.
Safety - Freedom from unacceptable risk or harm.
Risk - Combination of the likelihood of an occurrence of a hazardous event or exposure(s) and the
severity of injury or ill health that can be caused by the event or exposure(s) e.g.: High likelihood &
high severity extreme risk.
Management System: System to establish policy and objectives and to achieve those objectives.
Policy: Overall intentions and directions of an organization related to QHSE as formally expressed by
management
Objectives: Something sought or aimed for, related to OHSE-MS
Auditor: Person with competence to conduct an audit.
Continual Improvement: Recurring process of enhancing the EHS management system in Order to
achieve improvements in overall EHS performance consistent with organization’s EHS policy.
Corrective Action: Action to eliminate the cause of a detected non-conformity
Environment: Surroundings in which an organization operates, including air, water, land, natural
resources, flora, fauna, humans, and their interrelation.
Environmental Aspect: Element of an organization’s activities or product or services that can
interact with environment.
Environmental Impact: Any change to environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or
partially resulting from an organization’s environmental aspects.
Environmental performance: Measurable results of an organization’s management of its
environmental aspects.
Interested Party: Person or Group concerned with or affected by the environmental performance of
an organization.
Internal Audit: Systematic, independent and documented process for obtaining audit evidence and
evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which the environmental management system audit
criteria set by the organization are fulfilled
Non-conformance: Non-fulfilment of a requirement
Preventive action: Action to eliminate the cause of potential nonconformity
Prevention of pollution: use of processes, practices, techniques materials, products, services or
energy to avoid, reduce or control (separately or combination) the creation, emission or discharge of
any type of pollutant or waste, in order to reduce adverse environmental impact
Procedure: specified way to carry out an activity or a process.
Record: Document stating results achieved or providing, evidence of activities performed.
Acceptable risk - risk that has been reduced to a level that can be tolerated by the organization
having regard to its legal obligations and its own OH&S policy.
Hazard - source, situation, or act with a potential for harm in terms of human injury or ill health, or a
combination of these.
Ill health - identifiable, adverse physical or mental condition arising from and/or made worse by a
work activity and/or work-related situation.
Occupational health & safety (OH&S) - Conditions and factors that affect or could affect the health
and safety of employees or other workers (including temporary workers and contractor personnel),
visitors or any other person in the workplace.
Occupational health & safety management system (OHSMS) - Part of an organization’s
management system used to develop and implement its OH&S policy and manage its OH&S risks.
OH&S hazard - Source, situation or act with a potential for harm in terms of human injury or ill
health, or a combination of these. e.g.: slippery conditions.
Pollution - Contamination of the environment by man-made substances or energy that have adverse
effects on living or non-living matter.
Prevention of Pollution - Use of processes, practices, techniques, materials, products, services or
energy to avoid, reduce or control (separately or in combination) the creation, emission or discharge
of any type of pollutant or waste in order to reduce adverse environmental impact.

During external benchmarking we are also planning to visit the nearby industries to see their best
practices for implementation in our plant.
