CHEMICAL HAZARD AND RISK ASSESSMENT

Department Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Assessment Number 2020-IM-107
Assessor Dr. Ubaid-Ur-Rehman Ghori Date of Assessment 22/12/2022

1 LOCATION OF THE WORK ACTIVITY Swimming pool of Rachna Colony

2 PERSONS WHO MAY BE AT RISK

List names where possible
Pool Maintenance Operatives, Duty Managers

3 ACTIVITY ASSESSED Pool Disinfection

4 MATERIALS INVOLVED
AMOUNT
NAME and CAS NUMBER HAZARD RISK PHRASES / HAZARD STATEMENTS REPORTABLE?
and FORM
HTH Dry Chlorine Tablets 65% - 70& Irritant, Contact with combustible materials may No
7782-50-5 chlorine Respiratory Cause fire
concentrat Disorder, Harmful if swallowed,
ion Exposure Very toxic to aquatic animals,
(Liquid) causes Contact with acids liberates toxic gases,
severity Causes burns
Workers may be harmed from exposure to
chlorine.

If substance is reportable, have you reported it to the Health and Safety Unit? YES/NO

5 INTENDED USE and JUSTIFICATION (where appropriate)

Give brief details and attach protocol/instructions. Justification is needed for exceptionally hazardous substances (see Note 5)
As HTH chlorine tables for Pool Disinfection, Chlorinating agents are dangerous. You must use them carefully and
store them correctly to avoid certain risks: Risk of fire or explosion. Risk of chlorine gas fumes.

6 RISKS to HEALTH and SAFETY from INTENDED USE

From personal exposure or hazardous reactions. Refer to WELs, flash points, etc., as appropriate. Are pregnant women, breast-feeding
mothers especially at risk?
Highly toxic gas if mixed openly with other gas and can cause fire. Extremely harmful exposure if pregnant
women or breastfeeding mothers gets exposed.

7 CONCLUSIONS ABOUT RISKS

Is level of risk acceptable? Can risk be prevented or reduced by change of substance/procedure? Are control measures necessary?
Risk is acceptable providing correct PPE and storage methods are used.
8 CONTROL MEASURES
Additional to Good Chemical Practice, e.g., fume cupboard, etc. Any special requirements, e.g., glove type, etc.
Wearing mask, gloves and protective shoes is extremely important. Use Vacuum containers to store chlorine.

9 INSTRUCTION/TRAINING
Specify course(s) and/or special arrangements.
IME-253 Industrial Safety and Environment and Safety Engineer for safety instruction.

10 MONITORING
Performance of control measures,
Store in a location that is locked and childproof.
Personal exposure Health Surveillance, specify measures agreed with Health and Safety Unit
Swallowing /Inhaling it can cause harm.

11 WASTE DISPOSAL PROCEDURE

Include name, 6-digit code and H numbers if to be sent away for disposal
16 02 13 is the 6 digit code. Adding chlorine tablets to skimmer is the best method of its disposal. Use proper
implementation of wastage. Wastage should be thrown away in a closed packed container.

12 REVIEW
Enter the date or circumstances for review of assessment (maximum review interval 1 year)

The review of this assessment is 5th September 2022 to 16th January 2023.

13 EMERGENCY ACTION
TO CONTROL HAZARDS To stabilize situation e.g. spread absorbent on liquid spill; etc.
Wear safety chemical goggles and face shield should be necessary. In case of spill or leak, immediately put on
escape-type respirator and exit the Area.

TO PROTECT PERSONNEL Evacuation, protection for personnel involved in clean-up, Special First Aid
Prepare escape plan and wash entire body and surface area from clean water.
TO RENDER SITE OF EMERGENCY SAFE Clean-up/decontamination
Wash all the pool with clean water after disinfection. Physically remove all the contaminants and remove all the
contaminants by both physical and chemical means.
