I. OBJECTIVES
Content Standard: The learners recognize the communicative competence requires
understanding of speech context, speech style, speech act, and communicative strategy.
Performance Standard: The learners demonstrate effective use of communicative strategy in
a variety of speech situations engaged in by people in various situations.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
1. define speech style.
2. enumerate and differentiate the types of speech style.
3. present speech style in various activities.

WHO AM I?
Directions. Identify what is being described.

SPEECH STYLE
 It refers to the distinctive way of communication.
 It means the form of language that the speaker uses
which characterized by the degree of formality.
o Martin Joos (1976:156)

Task 1: Compute Me!


 Each group will be given an envelope. Inside it is the
puzzle pieces that they need to arrange. Each piece
includes simple mathematical equation that will help
them arrange the puzzle. They will write a short
description in a manila paper about the type of speech
style assigned to them.

 INTIMATE STYLE

 Completely private language used within family of very


close friends or group
 Uses personal language codes
 Grammar is unnecessary
 Does not need complete language
 Certain terms of endearment, slangs or expressions
whose meaning is shared with a small subset of
persons to person.
 Examples: chats between best friends, boyfriend and

CASUAL STYLE

 Language used between friends


 Often very relaxed and focused on just getting the
information.
 Slangs are quite often used in these instances. This
style is used in informal situations and language
 Relationship between speaker and hearer is closed.
 Examples: casual conversations with friends, family
members, chats, phone calls and messages

CONSULTATIVE STYLE

Used in semi-formal communication


 Happens in two-way participation
 Most operational among other styles
 Speaker does not usually plan what he wants to say
 Sentences end to be shorter and spontaneous
 Examples: group discussions, teacher-student
communication, expert-apprentice, communication
between work colleagues or even between employer-
employee and talking to a stranger.

FORMAL STYLE

Used
in

speaking to medium to large groups


 May also be used in single hearers- strangers, older
persons, professional
 Speaker must frame whole sentences ahead before
they are delivered
 Avoids using slang terminologies
 language is comparatively rigid and has a set, agreed
upon vocabulary that is well documented; is often of a
standard variety.
 Examples: meetings (corporate or other formal
meetings), court, class, interview, speech, or
presentation.

FROZEN STYLE
 Used generally in very formal setting.
 Most formal communicative style for respectful

situation
 Does not require any feedback from the audience
 Usually uses long sentences with good grammar and
vocabulary
 The use of language is fixed and relatively static
 Examples: a presidential speech, an anthem, and a
school creed.

Application Directions: The students will be divided into five (5) groups
each group will be asked to perform an activity about types of
speech style. The following activities are listed below.
1. Lights Camera Action: The students will be asked to
perform a short skit that shows intimacy of the
students towards their parents/guardian. (Intimate
Style)
2. Sing It. The students will be asked to create and
perform a jingle about the LGBTQ. (Casual Style)
3. Ipaglaban Mo. The students will be asked to create an
advocacy about Depression. (Consultative Style)
4. Spill the Tea. The students will be asked to create an
announcement about the achievement of the school.
(Formal Style)
5. Time Freeze: The students will be asked to create a
tableau about Marriage Ceremonies. (Frozen Style)
Note: Each group will be given criteria.
