History of Playa del Carmen:
Before being called Playa del Carmen, the name of this region of the Mexican
Southeast was known as Xaman Há, which means "Water of the North", (although
some say it also means "the black wind of the water of the north") which in pre-
Hispanic times was a small fishing village. It was one of the first villages seen by the
Spanish conquistadors in the early 16th century. It has a privileged location in front
of the island of Cozumel and it is believed that it may have been one of its ports of
embarkation. It was an extensive settlement of masonry constructions and
platforms for wooden and palm houses, whose inhabitants were mainly engaged
in fishing and agricultural activities. During the first stage of the Yucatan conquest
campaign, Alonso Davila, Francisco de Montejo's lieutenant, founded in this place
the Spanish settlement of Salamanca de Xamanhá, the second in the entire
Peninsula; however, it had to be abandoned in 1529 due to the scarcity of food
and the poor conditions of the Spanish soldiers there.

It was not until colonial times that the town received the name of Playa del
Carmen, due to the foundation of the chapel of the Virgin of Carmen. However, for
a long time the area was relegated because it lacked mineral deposits such as gold
or silver, and its soil was not fertile enough for massive plantations. Although at
this time, it was a resting point for pirates from the Caribbean, who plagued the
Spanish galleons in transit to Cuba. However, it was not until the 20th century
when a group of fishermen, coconut growers and gum extractors settled in the
region, being them the first settlers of what we know today as Playa del Carmen. In
the 80's it barely had 1,500 inhabitants, but the tourist development attracted
people from all over the Republic, to the extent that according to the 2010 Inegi
census, there were 159,310 inhabitants. As of 2017, the population of Playa del
Carmen, head of the municipality of Solidaridad, is estimated at more than 300
thousand people.
Location of Playa del Carmen:
Playa del Carmen is located in the north of the Mexican state Quintana Roo, by the
Caribbean Coast "Riviera Maya". The city, which is growing very fast, is located
between Cancun and Tulum. Today, the city is a very popular tourist destination
on the Caribbean coast of Mexico.

Mayan culture, you will find cochinita pibil, panuchos, salbutes, stuffed cheese,
chile relleno, enchiladas, tamales, chocolomo, among other delicacies. In addition,
thanks to its coastal location, fish and seafood dishes are among the most
requested, so on your trip be sure to try a tasty lobster, a shrimp cocktail, ceviche
or the traditional fish Tikin-xic.

The ideal complement is a refreshing cool water that can be chaya, tamarind,

cocktail, just to mention a few alternatives that will help you get used to the
