Howie Mandel- Bell Let’s Talk Quotes and Assignment

During his conversation Howie talks about his personal stories and things that he has
struggled with. He opens up about his mental health issues and stresses how important
talking and being honest is.

Select TWO of the following quotes (or 2 of your own from the video) and write a short
journal entry on your takeaway from the interview with Howie Mandel. Make sure you
include details and examples in your response and paragraph in your writing.

 “First and foremost, we’re all human and we all have an inner dialogue that we

don’t always share.”

 “The diagnosis is ‘you’re human’…”

 “Be accepting of mistakes, we’re all human. There is a stigma that exists where

people would rather lie than admit to being human.” As part of your response,

please consider how YOU cope when YOU make a mistake.

 “Just being human you are struggling. You are not alone. You are not the only

person on the planet.” As part of your response, discuss whether or not you are

willing to talk and why or why not.

 “Use any word you need to talk.” What word would you use to start a

conversation and why?

 “The fact that you are willing to sit here raw, like a human being and be willing to

talk is going to make a difference not just for yourself but for others”
First and foremost, we’re all human and we all have an inner dialogue that

we don’t always share

I think everyone has that voice in their heads that always tries to sabotage our

chances. We can’t do much to stop it. But we can’t also think that we are the only

ones who deal with them. Intrusive thoughts have always been an inner battle

that I have been dealing with since I was little. That little voice never goes away.

There is also a part of me that I never show people. Although I might feel

ingenuine, it’s important for me to realize that people around also have those

dark parts of them that they don’t share. That inner dialogue that healthy people

do not say out loud. That doesn’t mean that we should share all of those in my

opinion. “Just accept it” is a wrong message we should be giving to people. We

should learn how to deal with it. Not to just accept it and make it as an excuse to

poor behaviour.

“Just being human, you are struggling. You are not alone. You are not the

only person on the planet.” As part of your response, discuss whether you

are willing to talk and why or why not.

I rarely voice how I am really doing inside. I only do so to those I deeply trust,

which are not big in number. “The more you think of yourself, the more miserable

you become”. We are telling kids nowadays to always look in themselves. By

doing so we have an epidemic of mental health issues and kids who are

miserable. We shouldn’t be encouraging them to think about themselves more,

but to interact with others more and have a connection and support. By doing

that, people will feel less alone.
