the player’s progress. Failed checks would cause the player to

certain level of training they begin to see some of the benefits

Martial Weapon
Proficiency Modified Rule
Martial weapons are among the most difficult weapons to
use. They require years of training. Any player that is Image credit: Thomas Wievegg
proficient with martial weapons is assumed to have had at https://thomaswievegg.deviantart.com/art/Female-
least some training with all of the weapons or at least similar Blacksmith-385077800
weapons. However when a player starts the game and
chooses their weapons it is also assumed that these are the
player’s weapons of choice. These are the weapons they are
most familiar with and spent the most time training with and
using.
When they come across a new martial weapon they can take
that weapon and begin to use it right away. However the
weapon is less familiar to them and they will need to spend
some time practicing with it to become proficient. This time
is a number of days equal to 8 – their proficiency bonus. Until
this time is complete they only apply ½ their proficiency
bonus (rounded down).
Example: A ranger whom uses short swords buys a whip. He
has not used a whip much since the early days of his weapon
training if at all. The Ranger is level 5 with a proficiency
bonus of +3. It will take him 5 days (8-3=5) of practice before
he can apply his full modifier. Until that time he only gets a +1
modifier when using the weapon.

Tiers of play
The Player’s Handbook page 15 says that in 5th edition there
are 4 tiers of play
Tiers of play
Tier Levels
Tier 1 1-4
Tier 2 5 - 10
Tier 3 11 - 16
Tier 4 17 - 20

For a player or NPC to be an instructor or trainer of

another player they must be of a higher tier. If the NPC does
not have a level in the traditional sense, the number of years
they have been at their profession would substitute for their
level. So a NPC blacksmith that has been at his trade for 12
years would be a level 12 character or tier 3 as for as the
ability to train that profession is concerned. His stats for HP
and other combat stats may be different. If an NPC is level 2
but has 12 years as an artisan the DM may opt to choose
either number to determine the NPC’s tier.
Days
Whenever time is referenced as a “Day” being required, this
refers to an 8 hour period. The DM may choose to allow a
“day” or 8 hour period to be broken up into smaller
segments. i.e. 4 hours of training one day and 4 hours the
next would equal 1 day of training completed.
