COURSE GUIDE
CpE 4 – Differential Equation
3 units (3 hours a week) | TTH 1:00pm-2:30pm B405

I. COURSE OVERVIEW

A. Course Description

Ordinary differential equations, including linear equations, systems of

equations, equations with variable coefficients, existence and uniqueness of
solutions, series solutions, singular points, transform methods, and boundary value
problems; application of differential equations to real-world problems.

B. Course Outcomes
After completing this course, you are expected to:

1. Recognize differential equations that can be solved by each of the three methods
direct integration, separation of variables and integrating factor method – and use
the appropriate method to solve them,
2. Use an initial condition to find a particular solution of a differential equation,
given a general solution.
3. Check a solution of a differential equation in explicit or implicit form, by
substituting it into the differential equation.

C. Course Topics
To ensure the accomplishment of the course outcomes, this course will cover the
following major topics for you to master.

1. The derivative functions.

2. The exponential function and the natural logarithm
3. Differentiating a combination of functions.
4. 1st Order D.E.
a. Homogeneity
b. Integrating factor
c. Variable separable
5. Linear Equation
6. Homogeneous Linear Differential Equation

7. Exact DE
8. DE suggestion
9. Laplace transforms of functions
10. The Heaviside unit-step function
11. Laplace Transforms of Discontinuous Functions
