Ms Priyanka Tanaji Salunkhe (PTS), Planning Engineer at MDC, brought to
the forefront such a personality who nurtures great passion and ambition for the
engineering profession. She says, “right from my early days I had a fascination for
civil engineering and it was this urge which inspired me to pursue a diploma in
civil engineering.”
A fast learner, Priyanka has established her presence at site and is independently
handling the planning cell. Speaking on the project, she says, “this world-class
training facility is the cynosure of senior management and executing a job of such
stature gives immense pride.” When quizzed on the modus operandi she says “at
times one has to stay put at site but such stints are invaluable learnings.” With
regard to the major challenges, she says “facing the vagaries of nature especially
during monsoon, logistics and mobilisation of workmen were issues which were mitigated through effective planning and
execution.”
Priyanka’s family comprises her parents and two siblings. She credits her parents for their support and care which was
instrumental in shaping her career. The young lady is also a good cook and likes travelling.
GCC was quick to orient and get into the stream of action. Entrusted with the
finishing works, GCC gradually moved on to the QAQC Department. The shift
was instrumental in providing GCC with a greater challenge and thrust to perform.
He says, “it was a great opportunity to learn and also showcase my potentials
under the able guidance of my senior colleagues. I was fortunate to get this kind
of break and execute the spectrum of services which is helping me to evolve as a
competent professional.” His major scope of work included revising the PQP and
work methodology for phase III development, effective implementation of QMS,
monitoring site activities with regular checks as per the QMS system, material
testing and reporting.
Executing a project of such a nature was unique as it involved the direct interface
with the top management, says GCC. “We had to be prepared at any time for the
VVIP visits and review. The team adhered to creating proper work method awareness
by incorporating daily reading of PQP and EHS manuals. As per schedule, the
nominated staff took forward the awareness initiative which was monitored on a
regular basis.”
GCC is an eligible bachelor who hails from an agricultural background. His father
is a farmer and his younger brother is pursuing BSL LLB. Reading books and
listening to music are his prime hobbies.
Mr. Samir Satyendra Tamhane (SST) is an ambitious young man who has
plans to handle an independent project in the near future. A civil engineering
graduate, Samir began his career with L&T Construction in 2008. His first
assignment was Oberoi Commercial II which was followed by American Consulate
project and then MDC. At MDC, Samir is entrusted with a composite task
which involves multiple fronts.
Highlighting on the scope, he says “right from the security building, driver’s
dormitory, training centers, auditorium, discussions rooms, library and dining
hall, the one element which stood out was class and elegance. The spirit of
training and learning was embedded throughout the various facilities. The entrance
is a spectacular architectural form welcoming to the portals of learning. The
driver’s dormitory is a unique 34 bed rest room. The training halls are built to
suit different formats of learning and interaction. The auditorium is a 300 capacity
multi-purpose hall with sound proof dorma partition. The library spread over 4500 sq.ft across two floors has a running stock
of 3700 books, 500 CD ROMS. The dining hall accommodates 250-270 people.” He adds “I’m fortunate to be a part in the
commissioning of this world-class learning facility which has certainly enhanced my expertise in all aspects of civil engineering.”
Samir’s wife Samidha is an economics graduate and has keen interests in culinary and travelling.

SKS asserts on the importance of proactive action to avoid incidents at site. He says,
“good housekeeping practices go a long way in ensuring safety and improving
productivity.” On his strength he says, “I possess the willingness to learn from all
situations and get along with the best of terms with my colleagues.”
SKS’s wife Arti is a homemaker and the young couple has a nursery going son
Aditya and a one year old daughter Anwesha. Cricket and Chess are his favorite
sports and SKS loves to indulge in an occasional game when time permits.
Learning never ends as long as one has the zest to enhance knowledge and constantly
evolve. Meeting Mr. Yaduvendra Singh Chauhan (YSC), Project Coordinator,
brought to the forefront such a personality who has over the years evolved as a
competent professional through continuous learning both at work and beyond.
Reviewing on his 17-year experience YSC says, “I had the privilege to acquire a fairly
good knowledge due to hands on experience in myriad functions of project
management.”
YSC’s workscope as a project coordinator involved planning, execution and monitoring
the project. The task was unique and challenging due to the stringent deadline of 18
months. YSC highlights, “unlike other projects we had to do simultaneous engineering
and execution for the entire transformer, line and bus reactor bays leading to massive
works to be done in an unreasonably lesser time. There were practical and technical
issues which needed critical assessment. Interacting with clients and the consultant
M/s SNC Lavalin, whose core team was in Canada, meant that we had to go beyond
the geographical time zone and distance for ensuring the design approvals etc.”
YSC adds, “delays in equipment supply put considerable pressure on the execution
team. In addition we had to comply to some unique practices not normally adopted
in switchyard execution such as swing calculation, sag tension calculation, insistence
on international standards, uncracked section and submergence etc.” Among the major
initiatives, YSC highlights that a quality lab was set up at site and clients were
convinced on its advantages, first time usage of NAS filter and counter in an Indian
switchyard and blanket waiver on fire-fighting supplies which were on critical path.
This was a great saving in terms of cost and time. “In addition, implementation of
best safety practices ensured an achievement of 3 million safe manhours which won us the prestigious British Safety Council
International Safety Award 2012 in distinction category.”
YSC’s wife Vidyotmma is an arts graduate and a homemaker. The couple has two children – Aditi and Aditya. Daughter Aditi
is in Class IV and is a budding dancer with interest in music. Aditya has just stepped into school and likes playing computer
games. YSC is an enterprising person who has a flair for writing, reading and communication. His creative skills fetched him
the second prize in a creative writing contest during the HHL Centenary celebrations and similar awards in many in-house
competitions.

interesting and candid which provided insights into the christening of a GET at
L&T Construction and his subsequent growth. Reminiscing on his orientation and
transition at project site, SB says, “the present opportunity is a great exposure and
is an invaluable learning.”
SB asserts, “the task was onerous and challenging throughout. We used to work for
more than 15 hours a day and for me it was like running a marathon race. The hard
work was well rewarded when we achieved the commissioning within the schedule.”
SB highlights that monitoring techniques such as S-curve, visual chart, reviewing
the commissioning module helped to ascertain the status. The team has specially
prepared a L3 status elaborating on the plan for the project.
Hailing from Bihar, SB attributes his success to his parents who have guided him
throughout his student days. The young SB has keen interests in su-do-ko, palmistry,
etc. and loves swimming.

Having seen through this task, MRK is now working on the
216.5m long track hopper. He says, “I’am responsible to plan

guidance of our project manager and senior colleagues, I have
been able to achieve such hard targets within the stipulated

During peak operations the project had a workforce of close to 5500 in MAP experience and 1600 in CHP. The best EHS
practices adopted at site had been duly appreciated by the client. SS has a two-decade experience in handling EHS at project
sites which includes substantial stints outside L&T. His first project in L&T was the challenging Barmer Lift Water Supply
Project. His list of EHS achievements includes safety award for achieving 20 million safe manhours, best sub-contractor award
from clients, highest man-hours (more than 5 million man-hours) during road safety week, Best ecofriendly sub-contractor,
HIRA workshop and RoSPAaward for BLWSP SPR1.
SS’s wife Aprita is a homemaker and graduate in physics. In addition to managing the home front, she has a fondness for
writing and reading poems. The couple has one daughter Srinanda who is in Class VII and is a budding dancer. SS has a host
of hobbies up his sleeves which include solving crosswords, playing bridge, part-time cooking and meditation.

On his career in L&T, BK has a life changing incident to
relate. He recalls the fateful night on October 19, 2006 when
he, along with four of his colleagues, met devastating road

Posted at the project since October 2010, SKS had a task at hand as civil in-charge
of the pot room package. He highlights, “the quantum of works comprised 400,000
cum of excavation, 140,000 cum of concreting, 14,000 t of reinforcement and 4,560
piles. The schedule was very demanding and we had to ensure that critical works in
the pot rooms were done to precision accuracy. The 1140 m long pot line included
2 pot rooms of 28.8m width at 89.6m distance apart. During the execution of pot
room works, zero tolerance policy was adhered to. The major challenge was in the
concreting works which was done to insulate the room against electrical hazards. A
minimum cover of 50mm was to be maintained through the pour which was ensured
by accurate measurements by Alco meter.”
Elucidating further on the pot room work process, SKS says, “We could not use
binding wire for reinforcement as per PO and therefore tack welding was implemented.
To ensure electrical insulation the RCC works were tested electrically to determine the
potential of reinforcement with respect to ground. Another constraint was that we
could not use any nails for shuttering work. Only steel shuttering was to be used.
Such specifications made execution a tough and critical task.” The team came with a
lot of initiatives to counter the specific work methods. SKS says, “one interesting invention was the vibrator which is a handy
equipment that gives vibration effect to slabs in mass.”
On the personal front, SKS has an able partner in his wife Kiran who effectively manages the home front. SKS is blessed with
two sons – Anshu and Pratush – who are in Class VII and I. An enterprising SKS says “if not for L&T, I would have been
an entrepreneur. It is the delight of the projects which keeps me firmly rooted in my professional pursuit.”
