INTRODUCTION TO EDUCA TION

Thank you Sir for sharing yet another thought provoking and humorous video.
It was indeed quite interesting and had my attention from beginning till end. I
could relate to this talk because of the previous asynchronous assignment,
which was an overview of Dr. Anadale’s thoughts on different types of
philosophies. In this video Jim Holt touches upon all the 4 types of philosophies
mentioned by Dr. Anadale within a very short span of time. He begins with the
metaphysical question of why does the universe exist? This question questions
reality. Later, he moves on to question the scientific laws, which is nothing but
the philosophy of epistemology, that is questioning the truth. After which he
quotes Brian Greene, who said that it was an ugly universe and explains why he
thought so. So, he discusses the ethical value and the aesthetics of the universe,
which embodies the philosophy of ethics and aesthetics. Following this, he puts
forth the questions about self and his fellow beings like why do I exist and why
do you exist which are components of philosophical anthropology. Therefore,
with one question on universe, he touches on various philosophies, which again
proves Dr. Anadale’s point that philosophies are not mutually exclusive or
absolute.

However, towards the end Jim Holt did not answer the question that he asked as
a precursor to his talk, and that is exactly what philosophy is all about! It is a
whole lot of “Whys” and “Hows”, with no definite answer. Questions like this
are an exemplar to Kath Murdoch’s cycle of inquiry except that it goes on to
infinity.
