Pomeranian (So ia Barsuchenko)

Pomeranian (often known as pom or pom pom) is a breed of a dog of the Spitz type that
is named after Pomerania region in north-west Poland and north-east Germany in Central
Europe. They are classed as a toy dog breed because of their small size. The breed is
descended from larger Spitz-type dogs, speci cally the German Spitz. The breed has
been made popular by a number of Royal owners since the 18th Century. Queen Victoria
owned a particularly small Pomeranian and consequently, the smaller variety became
universally popular. In fact only during Queen Vicoria’s lifetime the size decreased by half.

Pomeranians are small dogs weighing between 1.36 to 3.17 kilograms and standing 20 to
36 centimetres high at the withers. They are compact but sturdy dogs. They are
distinctive dogs with its wedge-shaped head and short muzzle. But the most distinctive
thing about this dog is its thick, double coat. It has an outer coat which is long and
straight but harsh in texture whilst the undercoat is soft, thick and short in comparison.
Pomeranians can have variety of di erent colour combinations including white, black,
brown, red, orange, cream, merlee, blue and many more.

Pomeranians are very friendly, lively and playful, though they can be aggressive with other
dogs and humans. They are intelligent, respond well to training, and can be very
successful in getting what they want from their owners. They are extroverted, loyal and
enjoy being the center of attention. The pom makes an ideal companion and a
competitive show dog. As well as looking incredibly cute and cuddly, the breed is also
surprisingly alert, active and inquisitive. It is actually one of the most independent of the
Toy breeds and will have bad behaviour if not trained properly from an early age.
Pomeranians can be very picky eaters, but once you’re used to that it shouldn’t be much
of a problem. They are really good watch dogs and will bark when someone’s at the door.

Pomeranians normally live 12 to 16 years. A well-bred dog on a good diet will have few to
zero health problems. Thought they are prone to several di erent health problems if not
cared right. These problems are dislocated knee-caps, heart problems, eye infections,
skin irritations and tooth decay.
