PRACTICUM GUIDELINES

This manual presents a complete set of guidelines, policies and procedures to be

followed by all students enrolled in Practicum courses. This is designed to guide the
students on how to complete the Practicum/On-the Job training (OJT) course and meet the
desired training objectives. This section of the Practicum Handbook contains the specific
objectives, requirements and procedures that need to be undertaken in the completion of
the Practicum course. It also explains the specific responsibilities of each party involved in
the Practicum program. All these guidelines are formulated based on the Revised
Guidelines for Student Internship Program in the Philippines (SIPP) for All Programs
(CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 104, Series of 2017). In addition, the policies
concerning the Remote/Virtual Practicum Program are formed in accordance with the
Guidelines for Implementation of Flexible Learning (CMO No. 4, Series of 2020).

Rationale, Objectives and Description

As part of the requirements of Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management and

Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management, the Practicum/OJT program is offered to
broaden the students’ learning opportunities and enable acquisition of technical and life
skills, practical knowledge, skills and competencies in accordance with the prescribed
CHED policies and guidelines. With the challenges brought about by the pandemic, the
administrators of Arellano University School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (AU-
SHTM) created the Remote/Virtual Practicum program which is designed to facilitate the
application of theoretical knowledge and skills gained from the classroom and laboratory
sessions into workplace scenarios and practices based on the tourism and hospitality
industry standards in remote/virtual setting or flexible training modalities. With the challenge
of having government restrictions along with the safety and health risks entailed by the
traditional training modalities in actual workplace settings, this program has been formed to
ensure the provision of quality training, as well as the achievement of training objectives
and desired outputs in spite of the absence of the traditional face-to-face training sessions.
With the main thrust of producing qualified and globally competitive graduates, AUSHTM
offers this training program that mainly seeks to also develop among the students the right
attitude and values that will help them establish a successful career in the tourism and
hospitality industry.

The following outlines the specific objectives of this practicum program:

 to expose the students to actual business set-up and practices, organizational
hierarchies and structures, and relevant business systems and processes

 to increase the students’ knowledge of essential concepts, terminologies and

procedures which are utilized in actual workplace settings in the tourism and
hospitality industry
 to provide students with workplace experience/exposure in their respective
chosen field of specialization
 to form linkages with reputable industry partners to facilitate effective career
placement for its students and graduates by establishing and maintaining
harmonious relationships with these organizations
 to help students develop career awareness, realize their potential as
professionals and entrepreneurs, and determine their areas of improvement
needed to successfully achieve their career aspirations
 to enable students to build their character and enhance their personality,
confidence, communication skills and critical thinking skills, among others
 to inculcate among students the positive attitude towards work and people in the
workplace and develop proper work ethics, integrity, dependability, leadership,
concern for others as well as the other desired attributes of AU graduates

Under the Remote/Virtual practicum set-up, the student trainee is given options to
undergo training in either or both synchronous and asynchronous sessions as offered by
the reputable industry training partners of Arellano University who are recognized as the
Host Training Establishment (HTE). There is a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that
binds each industry partner or HTE and Arellano University in the implementation of the
Practicum/On-the-Job training program to ensure that this will be done in accordance with
the training plan and achievement of the desired training objectives based on relevant
CHED policies and guidelines as well as considering the available resources and learning
conditions of the student trainees.

The training sessions are facilitated under the direct monitoring and supervision of
the Practicum Coordinator from AU-SHTM and the HTE. Before the start of the
Practicum/On-the-Job training program, the student trainee is required to undergo a series
of Orientation conducted using online platforms which are facilitated first by the Department
Chair and Practicum Coordinator from AU-SHTM and then by the concerned HTE in the
corresponding program chosen by the student trainee. During the Career Orientation, the
students are intended to gain adequate knowledge and understanding about the career
opportunities that they may explore and specific career paths that they may pursue in the
hospitality and tourism industry. The next part of the Orientation facilitates the
comprehensive discussion of the mechanics of Practicum Crediting so the student trainees
are given alternative options to complete the required practicum hours. After this, the
industry partners are invited to present their training programs in a forum in order to help

the students become enlightened regarding their options and be able to make a well-
informed decision in choosing the specific training

program that they wish to participate into, considering the resources available to them and
their learning conditions at home.

Then, the Practicum Coordinator from AU-SHTM conducts Pre-Practicum briefing

where specific guidelines and rules are discussed with the student trainees to ensure the
smooth flow of the training program and address all necessary concerns as well as
inquiries of the student trainees before the start of the training program. Finally, the student
trainees undergo the Orientation conducted by the HTE to comprehensively discuss the
requirements, systems, procedures and processes that they need to comply with and
undergo in the duration of the practicum program and familiarize them with the specific
online platform that they will use in the program.

The Practicum Coordinators from AU-SHTM and the concerned HTE assume joint
responsibility in monitoring and evaluating the practicum performance of the student
trainees. Practicum monitoring is done on daily, weekly and monthly basis to ensure that
the trainees are well-guided in the duration of the program and that the concerns and
issues encountered by the trainees are promptly addressed and properly dealt with.
Specific documentary requirements are expected to be submitted by the trainees before,
during and after the implementation of the practicum program including especially the
Practicum agreement signed by both the trainees and their parent/guardian and the
Practicum Report. Meeting sessions with the student trainees are held by the Practicum
Coordinator on a weekly basis to allow them to share their training experiences and
address all necessary concerns. The student trainees are also asked to evaluate the
practicum program that they have undergone to identify areas for improvement. Post-
practicum meetings are also conducted by the Practicum Coordinator and Virtual
Completion and Recognition ceremonies may also be held with the participation of the HTE
to give corresponding awards to the top performing student trainees.

NARRATIVE REPORT

Week: 01 Day: 04 Date: June 9, 2022

COURSE/SESSION:
ESSENTIAL PUBLIC HEALTH: COVID-19 (LODGING): Reducing Exposure to COVID-19, Effective
Use of Face Coverings and Gloves

TASK/ACCOMPLISHMENT:
I received my access code today. That's why I only did my practicum in HIAP currently. So, I,
Registered first, then after that I started.
The first task that I completed was Essential Public Health: COVID-19 (Lodging), and then I
clicked the learn now button to get started. Reducing Exposure to COVID-19 was the first course that I
took, and I watched two videos before answering some questions about it. Then the next I took was
the Effective Use of Face Coverings and Gloves. I simply watched one video and then completed the six
assessments.
That’s all I got finished because I'm running out of time after coming home from school
to get grades and to evaluate.

LEARNING GAINED:
The pandemic has shattered the world, that’s why this topic is interesting and relevant to our
current situation
I am now more aware of what the virus is and now it transmits today, so we can better protect
ourselves and stop it from spreading. I gained a better understanding of the virus and what I can do to
reduce its effect. One of these is by using face coverings and gloves, as well as how to put them on and
remove them.
In addition, we must also guarantee our own and others' health and well-being.

PROBLEM(S)/CHALLENGE(S) ENCOUNTERED:
The problem or challenges that I encountered, apart from the fact that I took it late because I
was taking care of something at my school, the HIAP website where I was doing my practicum couldn’t
load, and our internet is extremely slow.

I didn’t finish the module I was taking yesterday so today I just continued the Heightened

one puzzle. Then the next is, Reassuring Guest (Lodging). I just answered some puzzles then watched
the video and a took theory assessment. I finished the first topic then I proceed to the next topic which
is Front Office Professional. I watched a video of the Introduction of the Front Office first then after
that I proceed to take the Front Office Fundamentals where I watched twelve videos and took the
three theory assessments. The length of each video is long that’s why I took it too long. Then the last
that I took for today is Front Office Communication. I watched the fourteen lessons then I answered
the four theory assessments.
So, I finished four courses for today and completed the first task which is the Essential
Public Health: COVID-19 (Lodging).

and free from viruses by reassuring them, giving them interactions and discussing their safety.
I also learned that we need to make a lasting good first impression on our guests in
Front Office because it is the first point of contact.

PROBLEM(S)/CHALLENGE(S) ENCOUNTERED:

TRAINING REFLECTION

LEARNING ASPECTS:
I learned a lot in this remote practicum program of the Hospitality Institute of America
Philippines Inc. They taught us to act professionally and greatly helped students in acquiring the skills
essential for employment in the tourism sector. They educated us on how to manage the front office
and back office of hotel and restaurant operations and to evaluate current developments in this field in
the hospitality and tourism sector.
Through this practicum, I gained knowledge of the fundamental elements of the hospitality
sector, including its products and services, interactions with clients and employees, creating a better
relationships, and cultural diversity. We also got to know the skills needed to work in the tourism
industry, which will help us improve and work more effectively. I also realized that we need to learn
from our mistakes. Before entering the industry, it is essential to understand the framework or the
work and learn from small or big mistakes. I also discovered how vital it is to have a thorough
understanding of the working environment and everything else before entering this field. This enables
us to function efficiently in this field once the course is finished.
As a result, my practicum with HIAP Inc. offers a valuable, relevant, and reliable platform for
my future job in the hospitality and tourism industry. The learnings and skills I have gained throughout
this practicum will undoubtedly influence my professional career in the long term.

INSIGHTS ABOUT THE PRACTICUM VENUE/COMPANY/HOST TRAINING

ESTABLISHMENTS:
I believed completing this program was a worthwhile experience. You will learn a lot and gain
valuable experience in the hospitality industry from the courses they offer. Additionally, the facilitators
are indeed very approachable and attentive to our needs. I can use all I've learned during this
practicum in my future career. One of the greatest practicum providers is HIAP Inc. I had a great
experience while taking my coursework there, and it is accommodating to all students. This program of
HIAP Inc. is very flexible for students who are also working. With the most recent developments in
interactive system design and multimedia production trends, they have the ideal platform and material
push for professional training. The platform they used was very accessible, fun, and easy to use which
is lobsterink.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE REMOTE PRACTICUM PROGRAM:

I highly recommend the Remote Practicum Program of HIAP to other students and universities
since we can learn a lot from the tasks that will be assigned to us. By that, it can enhance our abilities
and it can help us grow and increase our ability to satisfy customers in the long run. It's also fun and
interesting by challenging you to take the theory assessment after watching their lessons to test if you
understand or if you have learned something.
