CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social media is a big platform that can communicate whether the person is in the other
country we can also share our ideas and thoughts using social media. Hence, using
these platforms we can adopt more knowledge about what happening in our country
even in other countries we can know what’s happening through using social media. Due
to the pandemic, many people are hesitant to leave their homes, making online shopping
profitable. Many students experiment with online shopping; many of them are
successful, and it becomes their primary source of income. Online shopping is
significantly less expensive than traditional retail. Because the prices are low, there will
be increased demand. If commodity prices rise, more consumers will switch to offline
shopping. When compared to physical stores, online retailers offer significant discounts.
According to a survey of about 3,700 consumers in nine emerging and developed
economies, the COVID-19 pandemic has permanently altered online shopping
behaviors. Consumers in emerging economies have made the biggest switch to online
shopping.
"The survey, entitled “COVID-19 and E-commerce”, examined how the pandemic has
changed the way consumers use e-commerce and digital solutions. It covered Brazil,
China, Germany, Italy, the Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, South Africa,
Switzerland and Turkey." (08 October 2020, UNCTAD)
People nowadays are so busy that they don't have time to go to malls and buy the
products they want. Everyone enjoys doing their shopping online. Online shopping gives
you a lot of discounts that you may not find in malls or stalls. It will give you a voucher,
free delivery, and many more things that will give a discount to consumers. In short,
online shopping will save you a lot of money. Technology advancements have changed
the conventional retail market. Today's consumers can buy a variety of goods from
home, from groceries to clothing, thanks to the internet. The market for online shopping
has expanded significantly over the past ten years, giving rise to numerous online e-
commerce startups like Amazon, Shopee, Shein, Lazada and many more.
Online fraud is the biggest drawback of online shopping. Great offers that seem too good
to be true often draw in large numbers of people. On their websites, fake online shopping
portals showcase some fantastic products that entice users to purchase them.

Typically, websites that sell counterfeit goods rather than the real thing do not accept
cash on delivery and instead ask for online payments from customers. In the case of
offline shopping, you can get the item right away. However, this is not the case when
shopping online. Even though it only takes 10 to 15 minutes to purchase a product
online, it will be more than 4 days before it reaches you.
