SYSTEM
● A WELL-DESIGNED INTRA-CITY SYSTEM
Designed and organized for the efficient, convenient, and expeditious movement
of large volumes of people and goods, transportation systems must have a high
degree of user access.

● MULTI-MODAL

Covering all modes or transport; air, land, and sea and both passenger and
freight.

CHARACTERISTICS OF
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
● MULTI-OBJECTIVE

National and regional economic development, urban development, environment

quality, and social quality, as well as service to users and financial and economic
feasibility.

● HIGH DEGREE OF SAFETY AND RELIABILITY

The goal of safety planning is to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on all public

THE NATURE OF
TRANSPORTATION
DEMAND
Generally, a trip materializes after the trip-maker makes
certain decisions. These decisions can be broadly
classified as follows:

DECISION ON THE CHOICE
DECISION TO TRAVEL OF DESTINATION

3 4

CONCEPTS OF MOBILITY AND
ACCESSIBILITY

THE NATURE OF
TRANSPORTATION DEMAND
MOBILITY VS.
ACCESSIBILITY

MOBILITY ACCESSIBILITY

- is the ability of moving - it is the ease with which an

goods and services. individual can reach or
- it is how far you can go in participate in activity
a given amount of time opportunities.

- it is how much you can get

GOOD MOBILITY

● Easy to move around

● Space for moving is enough

POOR MOBILITY

● Inability to move around congested space

● Ability to get what you need

● Numerous modes of transportation

POOR ACCESSIBILITY

● Far destinations

People

Since the beginning, people have come up with ways to move

around rather than remain stagnant in one place.
Without buses, trains, planes, and cars, people wouldn't be able
to travel as readily as they do today.
Every day, millions of people all around the world depend on
transportation to deliver them to their homes, offices, and places
of business. Nobody desires to picture a world without this
ability.

PEOPLE AND GOODS

Goods
In order to deliver and provide raw materials and

revenue, and maintain stable ventures, many industries
and businesses require fast and efficient
transportation.

PEOPLE AND GOODS

Transportation Modes / Mode of

Advantages:
- it is convenient mode of transport for travelling long distances.
- it is faster than road transport.
- it is suitable for carrying heavy goods over long distances.
- its operation is less affected by adverse weathers conditions like rain, fogs, and etc.

Road Transportation
Advantages:
- it is cheaper mode of transportation as compared to other modes.
- perishable goods can be transported at a faster speed by road carriers over a short
distance.

of goods.
- transportation of heavy goods or goods in bulk by road involves high cost.

PEOPLE AND GOODS

Water Transportation
Advantages
- it is economical mode of transport for bulky and heavy goods
- it promotes international trade.

Limitations / Disadvantages
