The Laws of Exponents
#1: Exponential Form:
The exponent of a power indicates how
many times the base multiplies itself.
3 3
Example: 125 = 5 means that 5 is the
exponential form of the number 125.
3
5 means 3 factors of 5 or 5 x 5 x 5 = 125.
x means (x)(x)(x)(x)(x)
5
*we use parentheses ( ) and middle dot ꞏ
y3 means (y)(y)(y) for multiplication
The Laws of Exponents
The factors of a power, such as 74, can be grouped
in different ways. Notice the relationship of the
exponents in each product.

(7 x 7 x 7) x 7 = 7 x 7 = 7
2 2 4
(7 x 7) x (7 x 7) = 7 x 7 = 7
The Laws of Exponents
#2: Multiplicative Law of Exponents:
If the bases are the same and if the operations
between the bases is multiplication, then the result is
the base powered by the sum of individual exponents
The Laws of Exponents
#2: Multiplicative Law of Exponents:
This is used to combine two or more exponential
expressions with the same base
