LITERATURE REVIEW

Art Noveau Findings

• 1892- launched in Belgium then to France and to the rest of


Europe
• “Art Nouveau” term - invented to describe the work of
Belgian artists group Les Vingt (The Society of the Twenty).
• Paris - Samuel Siegfried Bing (S.Bing) - german art dealer -
named his gallery L’Art Nouveau.
• The style – Jugendstil : derived from Munich magazine Die
Jugend (Youth) founded by Georg Hirth - arose in Germany in
mid-1890s and continued till the first decade of the 20th C.
• Jugendstil phases: 1) floral motif inspired from English Art
Nouveau and Japanese applied arts and prints. 2) abstract
phase inspired by Viennese work of Belgian-born architect
and designer Henry van de Velde.
