1. The length of a rectangle is 5 inches more than its width.

If the perimeter of the rectangle is 34 inches, find the
dimensions of the rectangle.

Let x = Width Width (x)

x+5

2 ∙ Length + 2 ∙ Width = Perimeter

2 ∙ (x + 5) + 2 ∙ x = 34

2(x + 5) + 2x = 34
2x + 10 + 2x = 34

4x + 10 = 34
– 10 – 10

4x = 24
4 4

x=6

Width = 6 inches Length = (6) + 5 = 11 inches

2. The width of a rectangle is 2 cm less than its length.
If the perimeter of the rectangle is 52 cm, find the
dimensions of the rectangle.

Let x = Length x-2

Length (x)

2 ∙ Length + 2 ∙ Width = Perimeter

2 ∙ x + 2 ∙ (x – 2) = 52

2x + 2(x – 2) = 52
2x + 2x – 4 = 52

4x – 4 = 52
+4 +4

4x = 56
4 4

x = 14

Length = 14 cm Width = (14) – 2 = 12 cm

3. The length of a rectangle is twice its width. If the
perimeter of the rectangle is 24 feet, find the
dimensions of the rectangle.

Let x = Width Width (x)

2x

2 ∙ Length + 2 ∙ Width = Perimeter

2 ∙ (2x) + 2 ∙ x = 24

2(2x) + 2x = 24
4x + 2x = 24

6x = 24
6 6

x=4

Width = 4 feet Length = 2(4) = 8 feet

4. The length of a rectangle is 2 inches less than 3 times
its width. If the perimeter of the rectangle is
36 inches, find the dimensions of the rectangle.

Let x = Width Width (x)

3x - 2

2 ∙ Length + 2 ∙ Width = Perimeter

2 ∙ (3x - 2) + 2 ∙ x = 36

2(3x - 2) + 2x = 36
6x – 4 + 2x = 36

8x – 4 = 36
+4 +4

8x = 40
8 8

x=5

Width = 5 inches
Length = 3(5) – 2 = 15 – 2 = 13 inches
