Foreword
This European Standard has been prepared by
Technical Committee CENR%79, Respiratory
protective devices, the secretariat of which is held by
DIN.
This European Standard supersedes EN 145 : 1988 and

This European Standard shall be given the status of a
national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the iatest by February 1998,
and conflicting national standaràs shall be withdrawn
at the latest by February 1998.
The significant technical differences between this
European Standard and the previous European

Annex A (normative)
Methods of measurement of the insulation resistance
A.l Voltmeter ammeter method
The current is measured either directly by means of a micro-ammeter or a galvanometer (see figure Al) or
indirectly by a d.c. amplifier which indicates the current by measuring the voltage drop which it determines in a
known resistance (see figure k2a). The volîage is measured by a voltmeter. In certain cases the voltage£urrent
ratio is measured by an instrument indicating the resistance directly (see figure k2b).
A.2 Comparative method
The unknown resistance is compared to a known resistance by determjning the ratio of the currents when the
same voltage is applied in succession to two resistances (see figure k3a) or by baiancing the two resistances in a
Wheatstone bridge (see figure k3b).
For all these methods, the unknown resistance shall be large in relation to any calibrated resistance connected in
series with it so as to be submitted to practically ail the voltage.
