BS 7170 : 1990 and BS EN 145-2: 1993,which are withdrawn.
The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted to Technical Committee PW4,
Respiratory protection, which has the responsibilityto:

- aid enquirers to understand the te^,

- present to the responsible European committee any enquines on the
interpretation, or proposals for change, and keep the UK interests informed
- monitor related international and European developments and promulgate
them in the UK.

Annex A (normative)
Methods of measurement of the insulation resistance
A.l Voltmeter ammeter method
The current is measured either directly by means of a micro-ammeter or a galvanometer (see figure Al) or
indirectly by a d.c. amplifier which indicates the current by measuring the voltage drop which it determines in a
known resistance (see figure k2a). The volîage is measured by a voltmeter. In certain cases the voltage£urrent
ratio is measured by an instrument indicating the resistance directly (see figure k2b).
A.2 Comparative method
The unknown resistance is compared to a known resistance by determjning the ratio of the currents when the
same voltage is applied in succession to two resistances (see figure k3a) or by baiancing the two resistances in a
Wheatstone bridge (see figure k3b).
For all these methods, the unknown resistance shall be large in relation to any calibrated resistance connected in
series with it so as to be submitted to practically ail the voltage.

BSI - British Standards Institution

BSI is the independent national body responsible for preparing British Standards. It
presents the UK view on standards in Europe and at the international level. It is
incorporated by Royal Charter.
Contract requirements
A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.
Revisions
British Standards are updated by amendment or revision. Users of British Standards
should make sure that they possess the latest amendments or editions.
It is the constant aim of BSI to improve the quality of our products and services. We
would be grateful if anyone finding an inaccuracy or ambiguity while using this
Briîish Standard would inform the Secreíay of the responsible technical committee,
the identity of which can be found on the inside front cover. Tel 0181 996 9000; Fax:
