Throwback
A closer look
In the late 1880s, the attainment of education was not easy. Few
people had the opportunity to obtain higher learning due to extreme
poverty. Also, only a few schools accepted Filipino students during
that time. Mariano was one of the many less fortunate students who
tried their best to obtain an education.

Mariano attended Ateneo Municipal de Manila, where he obtained

his elementary and secondary education. He finished the degree of
Litra Bachiller (Bookkeeping) and a course in Perito Mercantil at the
same institution.

Poverty and the lack of schools inspired Mariano, later in his life, to
make education accessible to the poor. He wanted others to
have the opportunities that he have missed. He believed, like Rizal
did, that the only salvation of the country lies in the education of
the youth. To this end, he devoted his life and attained more
than modest success.

Through his inspired ambition, the National University came

Colegio Mercantil
In 1904, Colegio Filipino offered courses in business: bookkeeping
and accounting. Jhocson was convinced that these courses
would help the students to be financially secured and
respectable after graduation. This led to the changing of
the name to Colegio Mercantil.
Philippine Law School
In 1916, the Philippine Law School, formerly served as the
College of Law of National University and currently known
as Lacson College, was opened with the collaboration
between Simeon and Ricardo Conlu Lacson and Mariano
Jhocson. It is one of the first- ever law schools to use
English as a medium for teaching.

Not a national symbol
Using the term “National” does not mean that the
academic institution it refers to is considered a Philippine
national symbol. There is no such university that solely
represents the aspirations of the Filipino people.

Continuous expansion
In 1921, the Colleges of Education and Commerce were
opened. During the following years, the Colleges of Pharmacy and
Dentistry were opened in 1922. Civil Engineering was offered in
1925 and the Normal School was opened in 1930. Sanitary
Engineering was initially proposed in 1930.

Let's think about it
1945 is marked as the year when the Battle of Manila, the war
between Filipino guerillas and Japanese troops, came to a
conclusion. With the help of US troops, Filipinos once
again reclaimed the Philippines’ sovereignty. However,
Manila, the country’s capital, was heavily devastated. Nearly 100,
000 Filipino lives were lost, and the destruction the war had
caused are still evident today.

What was the condition of universities and colleges during the
