Meaning:
4.1: (Salutations to Sri Vinayaka) Who Wipes out the Sufferings of the Destitutes who take His Refuge; Who is the
Receptacle of the Words of Praises of the Ancients,
4.2: Who is the Former Son (the latter being Kartikeya) of the Enemy of Tripurasuras (i.e. Lord Shiva), and Who Chews
down the Pride and Arrogance of the Enemies of the Devas,
4.3: Who wields Terrible Power to Destroy the delusion of the Five Elements constituting the World (from the mind of
His Devotees); Who Himself is Adorned with the Powers (behind the Five Elements) like Fire etc,
4.4: From Whose Cheeks flow down the Juice of Grace; Salutations to Him Whose Praise similarly flows down like Juice

4.2: Who is Tapaswini (literally a Yogi, signifying the Embodiment of Meditation), and Who Loves the Seat of White
Lotus,
4.3: Who has a Firm Bosom and Whose Eyes are Filled with Great Serenity, like the Pure Lotus Petals,
4.4: Who is Manaswini (literally full of Mind, signifying the Embodiment of Wisdom); O Devi, Please Shower the Boon of

कववत्ववाराभशतनशाकराभ्याां दौ ायग्यदावाां िद

अनन् –सांसार–समुर– ार – (The gurupadukas ), which help cross over the ocean of samsara,
नौकातय ाभ्याम ् – (The gurupadukas ), by being like a boat
गरु
ु क्त दाभ्याम ् – (The gurupadukas )Which endow me with devotion to Guru,
वैराग्य–साम्राज्यद–पज
ू नाभ्याम ् – The worship of which blesses us with the wealth of vairagya.

ु ाभ्याम ् – My namaskaaras to those holy sandals of my Guru.
I again and again do namaskaar to the holy padukas of my Guru , which serve as a boat to cross this ( seeming)
shoreless ocean of samsara ( वसागर, bhavasaagara) and which grant us the devotion and fullness ( aaptakama
vairagya) to those who worship them.
Verse 2. कववत्ववाराभश-तनशाकराभ्याम ् दौ ायग्य-दावाम्िुद-माभलकाभ्याम ् ।
दरू ीकक्र ा-नम्र-ववपत्तत भ्याम ् नमो नमः श्री गुरुपादक
ु ाभ्याम ् ।।
कववत्ववाराभश – Ocean of poetry, knowledge and literary splendour.
तनशाकराभ्याम ् – (The gurupadukas ), which are like the full moon,
दौ ायग्य -Misfortunes, दाव -fire, अम्िद
ु – water, माभलकाभ्याम ् – garlands of rain bearing clouds, दरू ीकक्र ा – remove, नम्र –
who prostrate, ववपत्तत भ्याम ् – stream of adversities,
नमो नमः श्री गुरुपादक
ु ाभ्याम ् – My namaskaaras to holy sandals of my guru.
I again and again do namaskaar to the holy padukas of my Guru , which are like the full moon for the surging ocean of
poetry and knowledge, which are the garland of rain bearing clouds that put out the scorching fire of samsara and which
remove the distress of those that worship them.
Verse 3. न ा ययोः श्रीपत ाम ् समीयुः कदाधचदप्तयाशु दरररवयायः

ू ाश्च वाचस्पत ाम ् टह ाभ्याम ् नमो नमः श्री गुरुपादक
ु ाभ्याम ् ।।
न ा – who prostrate, ययोः – to the gurupadukas , श्रीपत ाम ् – for the affluent समीयुः – have turned out, कदाधचदप्तयाशु –
even, दरररवयायः– those afflicted by poverty, मक
ू ाश्च– the mute, वाचस्पत ाम ् – for the eloquent speakers, टह– indeed,

I again and again do namaskaar to the holy padukas of my Guru the worship of which transforms quickly even the worst
of the poverty stricken to gain nature of Lord of Sri , becoming possessors of great wealth and which transform the mute
ones to eloquent speakers ( vaachaspati, brihaspati, devaguru) endowed with vaak shakti.
Verse 4 नालीकनीकाश पदाहृ ाभ्याम ् नाना ववमोहाटदतनवाररकाभ्याम ् ।
नमज्जना ीष्ि त प्रदाभ्याम ् नमो नमः श्री गुरुपादक
ु ाभ्याम ् ।।
नालीक – A bunch of lotus, नीकाश– similar to, पद -legs
आहृ ाभ्याम ् – attractive, नाना ववमोहाटद– all kinds of desires born of ignorance,
तनवाररकाभ्याम ् – ( the gurupadukas) which remove, नमज्जन – who bow their heads,
अ ीष्ि– desires, त – plenty,
प्रदाभ्याम ् – ( the gurupadukas), those which fulfil.

I again and again do namaskaar to the holy padukas of my Guru, which are the beautiful lotus Feet capable of removing
delusion , sorrow etc born of ignorance, and which grant countless blessings to those who bow down to them.
Verse 5 नप
ृ ाभलमौभल व्रजरत्न काक्न् सररद्ववराजज्झषकन्यकाभ्याम ् ।

ृ त्वदाभ्याम ् न लोक-पङत ःे नमो नमः श्री गरु

ु ाभ्याम ् ।।

ृ ाभल– of the king, मौभल – the crown, व्रजरत्न – precious stone, काक्न् – shine like,
सररद् – A big river, ववराज – infested, झषकन्यकाभ्याम ् – water mermaids, नप
ृ त्वदाभ्याम ् –lifted up to the great rank of
sovereignty,
न लोक-पङत ःे – to whom a queue of people bowed at,

ु ाभ्याम ् – My namaskaaras to holy sandals of my guru.
My namaskars to those holy padukas of my Guru, which shine like the precious gem adorning the crown of a king which
are lustrous like the river in which the mermaids are dancing and which ( holy padukas) elevate the rows of people
bowing to them to the status of kings.Such is the glory of the padukas that even the impossible becomes possible.
Verse 6 पापान्धकाराकयपरम्पराभ्याम ् ापरयाहीन्रखगेश्वराभ्याम ् ।
जाड्याक्ब्धसांशोषणवाडवाभ्याम ् नमो नमः श्री गरु
ु पादक
ु ाभ्याम ् ।।
पापान्धकार– Darkness of ignorance, परम्परा– a chain of, अकय– Sun, ापरय – threefold afflictions of Samsara, अहीन्र – like
the king of serpents, खगेश्वराभ्याम ् – The eagle garuda , who is king of birds, जाड्य– insentience, अक्ब्ध – an ocean,
सांशोषण– that dries away, वाडवाभ्याम ् – a terrific fire

I again and again prostrate to those holy Sandals of my Guru, which are like the great fire which dries up the ocean of
ignorance, which are like an eagle for the serpentlike afflictions samsara.
Verse 7 शमाटदषट्कप्रदवै वाभ्याम ् समाधधदानव्र दीक्षक्षदाभ्याम ्।
रमाधवाङङघ्र- क्स्िर क्त दाभ्याम ् नमो नमः श्री गुरुपादक
ु ाभ्याम ् ।।
शमाटदषट्क– the sixfold qualifications beginning with शम, प्रद– endows,
वै वाभ्याम ्– wealth, glory, समाधधदानव्र दीक्षक्षदाभ्याम ्– initiated with the vow of charity & samadhi ( absorption,
concentration), रमाधव– Lord of Sri, i.e. Vishnu,
अङङघ्र– feet, क्स्िर क्त दाभ्याम ्– that bless with steadfast devotion.

My prostrations to those Padukas of my guru which grant us the wealth of six qualities beginning with Shama, which
have as though taken a vow to bless with the wealth of samadhi and which bless the devotees with steadfast devotion
to the feet of Lord Vishnu.
Verse 8 स्वाचायपराणामणखलेष्िदाभ्याम ् स्वाहासहायाक्षधरु न्धराभ्याम ्
स्वान् ाच्छ ावप्रदपज
ू नाभ्याम ् नमो नमः श्री गरु

स्वाचायपराणाम– who are parayan for sewa, अणखलेष्िदाभ्याम ् – bestows all the wishes of them, स्वाहासहायाक्षधरु न्धराभ्याम ्

ू नाभ्याम ् – which grace ones’ own hidden real nature,

I again and again prostrate to those Padukas of my Guru, which grants all the wishes of those devoted disciples and
which grants chittashuddhi ( purity of antahkarana) to those who do puja.
Verse 9 कामाटदसपयव्रजगारुडाभ्याम ् वववेकवैराग्यतनधधप्रदाभ्याम ् ।
िोधप्रदाभ्याम ् र ु मोक्षदाभ्याम ् नमो नमः श्री गरु
ु पादक
ु ाभ्याम ् ।।
कामाटदसपय – the serpant of desires, व्रजगारुडाभ्याम ् – like an eagle,
वववेकवैराग्यतनधधप्रदाभ्याम ् – bless with the treasure of discrimination & dispassion,
िोधप्रदाभ्याम ् – which grant knowledge, र ु मोक्षदाभ्याम ् – which bless with moksha quickly,

I again and again prostrate to those Padukas of my Guru which are like the eagle Garuda for the serpent like desires, (
padukas) which bless us with the treasure of discrimination, dispassion and knowledge, and which bless us quickly with
moksha.
GURU ASHTAKAM OF ADI SHANKARACHARYA
शरीरां सुरूपां िा वा कलरां यशश्र्चारु धचरां धनां मेरु ुल्यां
मनश्र्चेन लग्नां गुरोरङ्तघ्रपद्मे ः ककां ः ककां ः ककां ः ककां ||1
śarīram surūpam tathā vā kalatraḿ
yaśaścāru citram dhanam merutulyam
gurorańghripadme ḿanaścenna lagnaḿ
tataḥ kiḿ tataḥ kiḿ tataḥ kiḿ tataḥ kiḿ
Translation: One’s physique may be superb, one’s consort likewise, one’s reputation resplendent and renowned, and
one’s riches as high as Mount Meru; yet if one’s mind be not centred upon the lotus feet of the Guru, what then, what
then, what then?
कलरां धनां पर
ु पौराटद सवं गह
ृ ां िान्धवाः सवयमे द्धध जा म ्
मनश्र्चेन लग्नां गरु ोरङ्तघ्रपद्मे ः ककां ः ककां ः ककां ः ककां ||2
kalatraḿ dhanaḿ putrapoutrādi sarvaḿ
gṛhaḿ bāndhavāḥ sarvametaddhi jātam
gurorańghripadme ḿanaścenna lagnaḿ
tataḥ kiḿ tataḥ kiḿ tataḥ kiḿ tataḥ kiḿ
Translation: Wife, wealth, sons, grandsons and all such; home and kindred; all these things maybe there; yet if one’s
mind be not centred upon the lotus feet of the Guru, what then, what then, what then?
Meaning:
2.1: Reverential Salutations to You Who is mounted on the Garuda, and Who is the Terror to Kolasura,
2.2: (Reverential Salutations to You) O Devi Who Remove All Sins (when we Surrender to Her); Reverential Salutations
to You, O Devi Mahalakshmi.
सवयज्ञे सवयवरदे सवयदष्ु ि यांकरर ।
सवयदःु खहरे दे वव महालक्क्ष्म नमोऽस् ु े ॥३॥
Sarvajnye Sarva-Varade Sarva-Dusstta-Bhayangkari |
Sarva-Duhkha-Hare Devi Mahaalakssmi Namostute ||3||
Meaning:
3.1: (Reverential Salutations to You) Who is All-Knowing (Knowing even our Innermost Thoughts), and Who Gives All
Boons (When Her Grace is Aroused); (Reverential Salutations to You) Who is the Terror to All the Wicked (Tendencies)
(Destroying our Evil Tendencies),
3.2: (Reverential Salutations to You) O Devi Who Removes All Sorrows (When Her Compassion is Aroused);
Reverential Salutations to You, O Devi Mahalakshmi.
भसद्धधिुद्धधप्रदे दे वव क्ु त मक्ु त प्रदातयतन ।

Meaning:
4.1: (Reverential Salutations to You) O Devi Who Bestows Accomplishments (When She becomes Gracious) and
Intelligence (to direct our Lives properly with those Accomplishments); (Reverential Salutations to You) Who Bestows
both Worldly Prosperity as well as directs our lives towards final Liberation (Merging in Her Lotus Feet),
4.2: (Reverential Salutations to You) O Devi Who Always Abide as the Subtle Form of Mantra (behind Everything in
Creation and Within our Hearts); Reverential Salutations to You, O Devi Mahalakshmi.
Meaning:
5.1: (Reverential Salutations to You) O Devi Who is Without Beginning (Aadi) and Without End (Anta), and Who is the
Great Goddess representing the Primordial Shakti,
5.2: (Reverential Salutations to You) Who is Born of Yoga (out of the Great Consciousness) and Who is always United
with Yoga; Reverential Salutations to You, O Devi Mahalakshmi.

Meaning:
6.1: (Reverential Salutations to You) Whose Power is present behind both Gross and Subtle Forms as well as behind
the Most Terrible Form of Rudrani; (Reverential Salutations to You) Who is the Great Womb of Mahashakti (from
where every manifestation of Power arises),
6.2: (Reverential Salutations to You) O Devi, Who is the Great Remover of Sins, and Who Removes Great Sins from our
Lives (when Her Great Power passes through our Lives and Cleanses us) (maybe during adverse circumstances);
Reverential Salutations to You, O Devi Mahalakshmi.

Meaning:
7.1: (After Her Great Power Cleanses us we feel Her Peaceful Form) O Devi Who is Seated on a Lotus (Lotus of
Kundalini) (with a Gracious Face); And Who is abiding as the Supreme Brahman (behind all Creation),
7.2: Who is the Supreme Goddess and the Mother of the Universe; Reverential Salutations to You, O Devi
Mahalakshmi.
Meaning:
2.1: (Harih Om) O Jatavedo, Invoke for Me that Lakshmi, Who does not Go Away,
(Sri is Non-Moving, All-Pervasive and the Underlying Essence of All Beauty. Devi Lakshmi as the Embodiment of Sri is
thus Non-Moving in Her essential nature.)
2.2: By Whose Golden Touch, I will Obtain Cattle, Horses, Progeny and Servants.
(Golden Touch represents the Fire of Tapas which manifests in us as the Energy of Effort by the Grace of the Devi.
Cattle, Horses etc are external manifestations of Sri following the effort.)
Meaning:
4.1: (Harih Om. O Jatavedo, Invoke for me that Lakshmi) Who is Having a Beautiful Smile and Who is Enclosed by a
Soft Golden Glow; Who is eternally Satisfied and Satisfies all those to whom She Reveals Herself,
(Beautiful Smile represents the Trancendental Beauty of Sri Who is Enclosed by the Golden Glow of the Fire of Tapas.)
4.2: Who Abides in the Lotus and has the Colour of the Lotus; (O Jatavedo) Invoke that Lakshmi Here, Who is the
Embodiment of Sri.
(Lotus represents the Lotus of Kundalini.)

12.1: (Harih Om. O Chiklita, Invoke for me your Mother) As Chiklita ( referring to Moisture represented by Water )
Creates Loveliness in all things by its presence, similarly O Chiklita (now referring to Chiklita, the son of Devi Lakshmi)
you Stay with me,
12.2: And by your presence bring your Mother, the Devi who is the Embodiment of Sri (and essence of all Loveliness)
to Dwell in my Family.

Meaning:
20.1: (Harih Om, Salutations to Mother Lakshmi) O Mother, You (indicated by Dhanam) are the Power behind Agni
(the God of Fire), You are the Power behind Vayu (the God of Wind), You are the Power behind Surya (the God of
Sun), You are the Power behind the Vasus (celestial beings).
20.2: You are the Power behind Indra, Vrhaspati and Varuna (the God of Water); You are the All-Pervading Essence
behind Everything.
