KEY MESSAGE

For Educators:

Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) is one of the basic subjects in the
implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Program composed of four components
namely, Agri - Fishery, Home Economics, Industrial Arts and Information
Communication Technology. In this module, the focus is on Information
Communications Technology – Practice Occupational Health and Safety.
According to George Washington Carver, “Education is the key to unlock the
golden door of freedom”; thus, the Department of Education extends their resources
and finds alternative ways to address your needs and to adapt to the new normal of
the educational system as a bridge to Learning Continuity Plan. To address such
needs, the teacher-made learning modules are crafted.
You are reading the Animation NC II Grade - 11: First Quarter Alternative Delivery
Mode (ADM) Module on “Practice Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
Procedures (OS)”as written based on the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum. This
course is designed for high school students to develop knowledge, skills, and
attitude in the performance of cookery tasks.

Through the combined efforts of expert and competent educators from various
levels and schools in the Department of Education - Division of Cebu Province, this
module is created for your convenience. Despite all physical, social, and economic
restraints in the current teaching scenarios, this module came out after a thorough
planning, organization, editing and verification of the development team in order to
cater all the needs of our diverse learners.
This module will surely help our teachers and learners in the midst of the
challenges brought by the pandemic. The learners are given independent learning
activities which are anchored on the competencies based on the K-12 Curriculum
Guide, thus engaging them to work at their own pace within the comforts of their own
homes. This will gear them in acquiring the prerequisite 21st Century skills that will
adequately prepare them for work, start a business, acquire middle level skills, and
continue to higher education.
Therefore, your topmost priority is to explain clearly on how our learners will use
this module. You are to ensure that the learner’s progress and development will be
monitored, and their strengths and weaknesses will be appropriately assessed while
doing independently the activities in each part of the module. Moreover, you
consistently provide feedback to the learning facilitators about the progress of the
learners and encourage, as well, the learners to comply and to finish the modules on
time.
For the Learners:

WHAT IS IT

Most Common Hazards in a Workplace

Adapted from these websites:https://fitforwork.org/blog/identifying-workplace-

hazards/ &https://www.highspeedtraining.co.uk/hub/hazards-in-the-workplace/. The
words ‘risk’ and ‘hazard’ are often used interchangeably. However, if you are
responsible for managing the health and safety in your workplace, it’s important that
you understand the difference between them. The rest of this article focuses on
hazards, including where they might be found in different workplaces. We also provide
you with a range of further resources to make your risk assessment process as smooth
as possible.

The six main categories of hazards are:

• Biological. Biological hazards include viruses, bacteria, insects, animals,

etc., that can cause adverse health impacts. For example, mold, blood and
other bodily fluids, harmful plants, sewage, dust and vermin.
• Chemical. Chemical hazards are hazardous substances that can cause
harm. These hazards can result in both health and physical impacts, such
as skin irritation, respiratory system irritation, blindness, corrosion, and
explosions.
• Physical. Physical hazards are environmental factors that can harm an
employee without necessarily touching them, including heights, noise,
radiation, and pressure.
• Safety. These are hazards that create unsafe working conditions. For
example, exposed wires or a damaged carpet might result in a tripping
hazard. These are sometimes included under the category of physical
hazards.
• Ergonomic. Ergonomic hazards are a result of physical factors that can
result in musculoskeletal injuries. For example, a poor workstation setup in
an office, poor posture and manual handling.
• Psychosocial. Psychosocial hazards include those that can have an
adverse effect on an employee’s mental health or wellbeing. For example,
sexual harassment, victimization, stress and workplace violence.

Common health risks

Some of the most common health risks associated with workplace hazards
include:
• breathing problems.
• skin irritation
• damage to muscles, bones, and joints.

4
• hearing damage.
• reduced wellbeing.
How to Manage Hazards in Your Workplace

If you neglect your responsibility to protect your employees, you could face
financial and/or custodial penalties. Therefore, it’s vital that you properly manage all
your workplace hazards. This article should have helped you to identify and consider
more obscure hazards, but it’s important that you take further steps to protect you
employees. For example, you should:

• Carry out an appropriate risk assessment for the nature of the work
and hazards. We have provided some downloadable templates for you to
use throughout this article. You can find more, including those that are
relevant to your industry, by searching on the Hub.
• Introduce appropriate control measures. Once you have completed your
risk assessment, you must introduce controls to reduce or eliminate the
identified hazards. For example, you may be able to avoid work at height
completely when window cleaning by using extension poles or, if those are
inappropriate, you could reduce the risks by installing fall prevention
equipment.
• Appropriately train all your employees in their duties. All employees
should have basic Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 Health and Safety Training
or Office Safety Training, in addition to training for any specific workplace
hazards.

Contingency Plan

According to wikipedia.com made mentioned that a contingency plan is a plan

devised for an outcome other than in the usual (expected) plan.[1]
It is often used for risk management for an exceptional risk that, though unlikely, would
have catastrophic consequences. Contingency plans are often devised
by governments or businesses. For example, suppose many employees of a company
are traveling together on an aircraft which crashes, killing all aboard. The company
could be severely strained or even ruined by such a loss. Accordingly, many
companies have procedures to follow in the event of such a disaster. The plan may
also include standing policies to mitigate a disaster's potential impact, such as
requiring employees to travel separately or limiting the number of employees on any
one aircraft.
During times of crisis, contingency plans are often developed to explore and
prepare for any eventuality. During the Cold War, many governments made
contingency plans to protect themselves and their citizens from nuclear attack.
Examples of contingency plans designed to inform citizens of how to survive a nuclear
attack include the booklets Survival Under Atomic Attack, Protect and Survive,
and Fallout Protection, which were issued by the British and American governments.
Today there are still contingency plans in place to deal with terrorist attacks or other
catastrophes.

Personal protective equipment (PPE)

WTMz0SZ46gGM & https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/personalprotectiveequipment/.
Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment
worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and
illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical,
radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards. Personal
protective equipment may include items such as gloves, safety glasses and shoes,
earplugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, or coveralls, vests, and full body suits.
What can be done to ensure proper use of personal protective equipment?
All personal protective equipment should be safely designed and constructed
and should be maintained in a clean and reliable fashion. It should fit comfortably,
encouraging worker use. If the personal protective equipment does not fit properly, it
can make the difference between being safely covered or dangerously exposed. When
engineering, work practice, and administrative controls are not feasible or do not
provide sufficient protection, employers must provide personal protective equipment
to their workers and ensure its proper use. Employers are also required to train each
worker required to use personal protective equipment to know:
▪ When it is necessary
▪ What kind is necessary
▪ How to properly put it on, adjust, wear, and take it off
▪ The limitations of the equipment

Proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of the equipment

If PPE is to be used, a PPE program should be implemented. This program

should address the hazards present; the selection, maintenance, and use of PPE; the

6
training of employees; and monitoring of the program to ensure its ongoing
effectiveness.
