To start off the Academic Year 2022-2023, the Professors, 03 President's Corner
Formators, students, and staff of Don Bosco School of Theology
(DBST) celebrated its Inaugural mass at the National Shrine of Mary
Help of Christians on the Feast of the Queenship of Mary last August
22, 2022. It was presided by the Papal Nuncio to the Philippines,
Archbishop Charles John Brown, DD.

In his homily, Archbishop Brown told the whole congregation

that it was so significant that DBST opened the Academic year on
the feast day of the Coronation of Mary as Queen of heaven and
earth. He made them reflect on the events of the Annunciation
about the impossibility of the news of the Angel but Mary said “let it
be done to me according to your Word”. He also stressed that the
bible said that the word of God will never fail. Theology comes from
the word Theos, meaning “God” and Logos meaning “Word”, so
Theology means “The Word of God”. So, all of those who are studying
is in the reception of the word of God, and whenever they
contemplate the word, they can be formed by those words.

MARY THE MODEL OF THEOLOGY
(continued)
Another reflection he shared was about the exchange between the
woman who said, “happy is the womb that bore you” and Jesus replied
“more blessed are those who hear the word and heed it”. Archbishop Brown
said that Mary heard God’s word and kept it, and that is why she is blessed.
He shared that St. Augustine helps us understand this more when he wrote,
“the truth and the body were both Christ”, meaning, the truth was kept in
Mary’s mind and she was carrying in her womb the body of Christ. St.
Augustine further says that the truth conceived in her mind is more
important than what was conceived in her womb. And so, what is the
significance of these to all of those who are in DBST? Just like Mary, they
are conceiving Jesus in their mind. They allow the word of God to be
conceived to penetrate their mind and be able to change and transform
their heart. By doing this, they will begin to see things in a new way. So, in
essence, Mary’s physical conception is an analogy for their study of theology
which is their mental conception of the word of God.

The Archbishop said that Mary is the model of Theology and

theologians, and that is why starting the academic year on the feast of
Mary’s Queenship is so appropriate. The study of Theology is to bring Christ
and evangelize the word of God in all its fullness to a world that is in so
much need of light and the love of God. He ended his homily by challenging
them to show the world the warmth of God’s love.

After the Inaugural mass, Archbishop Brown had a Q&A with students
and formators of DBST with regards to the implications of the Apostolic
Constitution Praedicate Evangelium towards building a Synodal Learning
Community. He shared about the changes being made by Pope Francis with
regard to the Apostolic Constitution. With the Praedicate Evangelium, the
most important department is the Dicastery for Evangelization which
emphasizes the importance of spreading the good news. Baptized lay
Catholics can now be appointed to head dicasteries or other bodies of the
Roman Curia. The Archbishop also said that evangelization is both through
words and actions. One cannot do without the other but he also said that
evangelization through actions would give more emphasis to the words
spoken. He further said that we do not have to wait for the Church
documents to be handed down to us before we act. We have to act now and
do our best to reach out to many as much as possible.
