Title: MACHINE SHORTHAND PROFICIENCY OF OFFICE

This study was conducted to determine the machine shorthand proficiency of

Office Administration students of Camarines Norte State College. Data were gathered

through a survey questionnaire with a 4-point Likert scale using the descriptive method.

Percentage, weighted mean, and ranking methods were the statistical tools used to

interpret the results. One hundred thirteen (113) 3rd year and 4 th-year students served as

respondents through total population sampling. The results revealed that in terms of

assembly and troubleshooting, the respondents are knowledgeable in tripod assembly but

lacked knowledge in software updates while in terms of speed and transcription skills,

respondents are knowledgeable of the machine shorthand abbreviations, derivatives, and

phrases but are unable to meet the required dictation rate of 60 words per minute with

98% accuracy in transcription. The inadequacy of steno machines was the biggest

problem encountered by the respondents in acquiring proficiency. Based on the results,

an action plan was formulated as a recommendation which includes the provision of

additional steno machines and laboratory rooms to possibly enhance machine shorthand

proficiency.
