Abstract:

Aim:
The aim of this experiment is to determine the amount of volume of acid needed to react with
the base and make the reaction neutral using titration method.

Introduction:
Materials and apparatus list:
1) Empty weighting bottle
2) Burette
3) Pipette (25cm3)
4) Volumetric flask (250 cm3)
5) Conical flask
6) Funnel
7) Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
8) Borax powder
9) Distilled water
10) Gram scale
11) Pipette filler
12) Methyl orange (indicator)
13) Dropper
14) Beaker

Risks and hazards:

Substance Hazard Control
Minimal hazard. Mild Prevent contact with eyes,
Borax irritant avoid contact with skin
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) Mildly irritating Prevent contact with eyes,
0.10M avoid contact with skin
Lab coats and eye protection must be worn

Procedure:
Results:
The results were as follows:

Titration 1 Titration 2 Titration 3

Initial burette 0.00
reading (cm3)
Final burette
reading (cm3)
Titre (cm3)
Mean titre (cm3)

Borax weight=

Calculations:
From the results:
a) The relative molecular mass of borax is:
(2*23) + (4*10.8) + (7*16) + (20*1) + (10*16) = 381.2
b) The concentration of the borax solution in moldm-3 is:

c) The mean accurate titre to 2 decimal places is:

d) The amount in mol of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the mean titre is:

e) The amount in mol of borax in the 25 cm3 aliquots is:

f) The molar ratio in which the borax and hydrochloric acid (HCl) react:

g) Suggest an equation for the reaction between borax and hydrochloric acid (HCl):
