Character Analysis: Granny (Sample)
In the novel, Oranges in no man’s land, Elizabeth Liard portrays Granny as an “old and worn
and beaten” lady who “always grumbled about her sore hip”.
However, she was at the same time a strong willed and patient woman. Despite her illness,
she worked at Dr. Leila’s home before the war began and during war, she “performed
miracles to keep (them) fed.” “Off she’d go, a determined look on her face, holding one
hand to her side to support her painful hip.”
For her grandchildren, she was extremely protective and “fussy about them (even) talking to

Granny is a major character and a key factor in the events and flow of the story. Her
