Factors That Contribute To Sleep Deprivation: It's Impact On Stem Students Academic

Performance.

Background of the Study

Having adequate sleep is a vital part of everyday life. Students of Science Technology
Engineering (STEM) are experiencing a lack of sleep because of not maintaining their time to
sleep. The average time of sleep is 8 hours. Focusing on STEM students, sleep deprivation is
relevant and its factors may contribute to their health. Countless sleepless nights that may be
encountered by STEM students can have an impact on their learning capacity and lead to poor
academic performance. In general, sleep deprivation has long-term and short-term effects on
health. The importance of this study is to know the effects of sleep deprivation on students and
their academic performance.

There are certain reasons why STEM students are sleep deprived, such as the learning
environment they face today. The more they are involved in sleepless nights, the more they
affect their academic performance. In STEM, students should not be tolerated. The main
objective of this study is to investigate the effects of sleep deprivation on students and their
academic performance. Through the gathered data, researchers would benefit each stem students
on how to overcome and having adequate sleep.

Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to determine the impact of sleep deprivation to the academic performance of
STEM students. Specifically, this research sought to answer the following questions:

1. What impact does sleep deprivation has on the academic performance of STEM students in
general?

2. What are the factors that contribute to sleep deprivation?

3. How do STEM students maintain good academic performance while being sleep deprived?

4. How can students overcome sleep deprivation?

Scope and Delimitation

The general intent of this study is to know the self care practices of Donsol National
Comprehensive Highschool's STEM students with the focus on the factors that causes sleep
deprivation: it's impact on the academic performance.

This study will mainly identify and assess the different factors that causes sleep deprivation
amongst the STEM students. Also, this study yearn to identify on how can the researchers
develop and assist the students to be responsible and self reliant with it comes to sleep
deprivation that they're currently facing or will be facing in the future.

This study will be conducted in a limited amount of financial resources and time framework.

subjects. Teachers and education officials typically measure achievement using classroom
performance, graduation rates and results from standardized tests.

STEM stands for Science,Technology,Engineering, and Mathematics strand. Through the STEM
strand senior highschool students are exposed to complex mathematical and science theories and
concepts which will serve as a foundation for their college courses.
