I think the best model to be used in integrating social and behavioral change for Filipinos

to use SUPs is the Diffusion of Innovations theory, according to the PDF file titled “Filipino’s

Opinions on Single-Use Plastics” huge portion of Filipinos opt on using Single-Use Plastics,

Seven of 10 Filipinos would consider more sustainable packaging for food condiments (e.g. oil,

soy sauce, vinegar), while 4 of 10 would do so for personal care items (e.g., shampoo,

conditioner) and household cleaning products (e.g., powder, laundry detergent). With this data,

we could say that there are still Laggards who are not yet ready to change on their preference on

using Single-Use Plastics, it is a normal in a community that there are still some people who are

not yet ready to change their behavior as changing is one of the hard choices to be made by us,

we rather stick to our old methods than changing to new methods because we are already

comfortable with how we do things in the old way.

Diffusion of Innovations theory has four main elements, Innovation which is the practice

or the idea that perceived by new by an individual, Communication channel, in which a message

gets from receiver to sender, Time , the rate of how an individual can adopt to the innovation

and lastly the Social System engaged in collaborative problem solving to achieve a common

goal. The Diffusion of Innovations theory is fit in the phenomenon as it is known that older

generation are the most known to not shift on new ideas and practices. They tend to stick on

what they have already experienced, and it is also hard for them to be known in the effects of the

plastic in the environment.


To integrate the Diffusion of Innovations, we can study about the data gathered and

determine how, why, and how quickly populations respond to new ideas. Then, use your findings

to guide your activities. Work with leaders and other influential individuals in target

communities to encourage them to adopt and promote the new desired behaviors. Use change

agents to "diffuse" the new behavior. Examine the important factors that influence how quickly

ideas or behaviors spread throughout communities to identify changes in ideas or behaviors that

can be diffused.
