Voici une liste alphabétique des principaux noms de pays et d’habitants, vous y trouverez
certaines irrégularités. Mais dans la grande majorité des cas, le nom de l’habitant et le nom
du peuple se forme à partir de l’adjectif : American (adjectif), an American (nom d’habitant),
the Americans (nom du peuple). Quand le nom de l’habitant et/ou du peuple diffère de
l’adjectif, il est placé entre parenthèses. Notez, dans tous les cas, la majuscule.

Il existe trois (3) grands secteurs où l’Anglais varie entre la Grande Bretagne et les Etats-Unis :
le vocabulaire, la prononciation et la grammaire. C’est à partir de l’anglais que s’est
développé l’américain, mais il est certain aujourd’hui que l’américain qui influence fortement
l’anglais britannique. Certaines distinctions signalées ici, étaient autrefois tournures que les
anglophones considéraient comme des « américanismes ».
A. Le vocabulaire
Soit il existe deux mots différent pour la même idée, soit le même mot ne recouvre pas
exactement lA même idée. Voici quelques paires de mots signifiant la même chose en
Anglais américain et britannique.
B. La prononciation
Il serait trop long ici de symboliser en détail les différences de prononciation qui existe en
l’anglais britannique et l’anglais américain. Elles sont nombreuses, souvent évidentes pour
une première fois aux Etats-Unis et soumises également à des variations régionales
importantes.
C. La Grammaire
Les deux différences grammaticales les plus importantes sont l’utilisation du prétérite au lieu
du present perfect en américain pour un bilan avec just et un emploi très restreint de have
got en américain.
Certains verbes irréguliers en anglais sont réguliers en américain (burn, dream, lean, learn,
smell, spell, spill, spoil, wake…) et certain verbes réguliers en anglais sont irréguliers en
américain. Par exemple:
Irregular verbs
There are thousands of regular verbs in English. This is a list of at least 600 of the more
common regular verbs. Note that there are some spelling variations in American English (for
example, "practise" becomes "practice" in American English). Don’t forget, the preterite or
the past participle of regular verbs takes "ed".
