A Paper on the Development of Peruvian Culture

The Peruvian Civilization is diverse culturally and artistically as it is the

amalgamation of different cultures and has the history of millenniums. So, its diversity of

culture and art keeps it safe from extinction. A culture cannot be preserved because it evolves

and changes as time goes but a civilization which has series of cultures, always possess the

same spirit so it should be preserved. Culture is just a path through which we try to preserve a

civilization.

The matter of Peruvian land is same as it has remained a home for many cultures. In

the very beginning, there were Chavins and Sechins who had their own cultures and expertise

in stone carving. The 2nd wave of civilization was the Paraces and the Saliners. They were

experts in kiln-fired ceramics. Then Nezcas emerged and they introduced Nazca Lines. At

last the most famous culture of Inca civilization rose in 1400 AD in Peru. All these cultures

constructed and contributed in the evolution of the great Peruvian Civilization. When

Francisco Pizarro invaded Peru in 1532, the culture of the colonizers also came with them.

Afterwards, Black’s culture, Chinese culture and Asian culture also mixed up in Peruvian’s

and this mixture made Peru and it’s civilization more rich and heterogeneous.

The sign of a rich culture is that it happens to be very flexible and accepts things from

other cultures very easily. When the Peruvian society interacted with other cultures of the

world, it started to adopt things from them, it created a sense of harmony among them. In this

way, the hybrid culture helped them to go forth in life. According to a survey, the 30% of the

population of Peru is Indigenous, 40% mixed, 10% black, 10% white and 10% Asian.

The Peruvian people realized that if they remained stick to the primitive norms, they would

have been ceased to exist. So, they timely evolved and indulged themselves with other

cultures. Cross-culturality allowed them to interact with other ethnic groups which lived in

different areas. As a result, it improved their economic, ethical and social conditions. It gave

the discriminated class, a chance to become prosperous and socioeconomically powerful.

Peru has undergone significant changes in terms of population and artistic expression. Many

of the highland people’s traditions differ from those of the rest of Peru. The arts are strongly

rooted in the history of the Andean people and have spread across the continent. Poetic

storytelling, old dances, deity paintings, and a reverent attitude toward the cosmos are

imparted to their offspring. The Peruvian folk informed their new generations about their

history. Knowledge about history is the first step to make progress in future. Frantz Fanon

once said, “[they] determine to renew their content once more with oldest and most Pre-

colonial springs of life of their people.”

The people of Peru knew that they were going to be the guardians of their great

civilization and in return their cultural legacy would save their identity from getting extinct.

Winston Churchill says, “we shape our buildings and afterwards, our buildings shape us.”

While producing art they installed hybridity in it and this strategy brought out the hidden

meaning and insight about the personality of people and other cultural attributes. And

exhibition in Montreal defined Peruvian history of hundred of years in the language of

symbols. It presented that how Pre-colonial civilization submerged into the post-Conquest

era. During colonialism and after it, the unprecedented mingling of people, material and style

from different cultures gave birth to new art forms and iconography. This newness further

made the people more interested in their art. This diversity and newness can be seen in the

famous painting of Young Virgin Spinning that is the hallmark of cultural and artistic

syncretism.

To conclude, the diverseness of Peruvian culture lies in the confluence of different

cultures and the “authentic” Peruvian a hybrid creation. This civilization exists because its art

evolves according to the need of the hour.
