Program: B. Sc in Civil and Environmental Engineering
Final Examination Semester: Fall-2022
Course Code: CE 4301, Course Title: Wastewater and Industrial Wastewater
Total Marks: 40 Duration: 120 mins.
The marks in the margin indicate full marks. Draw the figure where necessary.

Answer the first question which is mandatory and answer any three questions from other
four questions.
1. A 6 storey apartment building in which every storey got 2 units and in every unit 4 16
persons leaving on average, those residents generating an average wastewater flow rate
of 160 lt. per capita per day. Design a double chamber septic tank for the building that
will be desludged in every 4 years. For ensuring better effluent quality, it is
recommended that the minimum hydraulic retention time for the tank be 1.0 (one) day.
Due to space constraints, specific tank area has to be restricted within 12 m2. Assume
wastewater temperature within the tank to be 25 0C. Check clear space depth. Draw a
net sketch showing details of septic tank dimensions and depth of different zones.
2. A sedimentation tank is treating 5.5 million litres of sewage per day containing 300 08
ppm of suspended solids. The tank removes 55% of suspended solids. Calculated the
quantity of sludge produced per day in bulk and weight (Assume, specific gravity of
wet sludge = 1.02), if
(a) moisture content of sludge is 99% ;
(b) moisture content of sludge is 98% .

3. Determine the rate of discharge and discharge velocity in a 32 cm circular sewer and 08
depth of flow in equal to 9 cm. For sewer diameter of 32 cm Discharge is 3600 l/min
and velocity is 850 mm/s while flowing full.(Use hydraulic elements diagram to
solve this problem, which is provided with this question and after using this attached
the diagram with answer script)

4. Using the NRC equations, determine the BOD5 of the effluent from a single-stage, 08
low-rate trickling filter that has a filter volume of 1534 m3, a hydraulic loading of 2100
m3/d, and a recirculation factor of 2.81. The influent BOD5 is 200 mg/L.

5. (a) Describe the mechanisms of imhoff tank briefly with a clear sketch. 04
(b) Write down shortly any two steps of sludge treatment process from below: 04
(i) Thickening; (ii) Incineration; (iii) Sludge reuse or disposal options
