Generators and power lines were blown down in the United States due to extreme cold: one million
people were without power. On the roads, many accidents were reported.

A polar wind, snow and freezing temperatures. This is the explosive cocktail that is hitting half the
United States. Experts already predict a cyclonic bomb as seen once in a generation. On snowy roads
in the north of the country, visibility is almost nil. The wind gusts are so strong - nearly 80 km/h - that
motorists can barely advance. In front of these conditions, many cars hit the ditch. Another was even
plunged into a frozen lake after skidding on the ice.

Elizabeth II: the royal family celebrates its first Christmas at Sandringham without the Queen

This is an event that has not happened for many, many years. The Christmas speech of the English
monarch will be given by a king. Especially since it will be the first one that will be shown on
television, the previous ones, made by a king, were only broadcast on the radio. The royal family was
gathered at the church to attend the Christmas mass. There was King Charles, Queen Consort Camilla
who both walked in front of the other family members. Queen Elizabeth had always celebrated
Christmas mass in this church in Sandringham, except during the Covid-19 health crisis.

The royal family was almost complete for this procession, even Prince Andrew was present. Harry
and Meghan were absent from this ceremony. This is the first Christmas without Elizabeth II and
dozens of British people were present to offer flowers to the royal family.

The Supreme Court extended the limits put in place under then-president
Donald Trump expelling and turning away most asylum seekers.

The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday, December 27, to keep in place a controversial Trump-
era rule that allows Customs and Border Patrol officials to deport migrants at the US southern
border as a public health measure in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. By extending a
temporary stay that Chief Justice John Roberts issued last week, the Court is dashing the
hopes of immigration advocates who had been anticipating their end this week. The case will
now be argued in February and the stay will be maintained until the justices decide the case.

The limits were put in place under then-President Donald Trump at the beginning of the
pandemic. Under the restrictions, officials have expelled asylum-seekers inside the United
States 2.5 million times and turned away most people who requested asylum at the border on
grounds of preventing the spread of Covid-19. The restrictions are often referred to as Title 42
in reference to a 1944 public health law.

In the US, Southwest Airlines flight
cancellations continue to snowball
Travelers who counted on Southwest Airlines to get them home suffered another
wave of canceled flights Wednesday, December 28, and pressure grew on the federal
government to help customers get reimbursed for unexpected expenses they incurred
because of the airline's meltdown.

Exhausted Southwest travelers tried finding seats on other airlines or renting cars to
get to their destination, but many remained stranded. The airline's CEO said it could
be next week before the flight schedule returns to normal. By early afternoon on the
East Coast, about 90% of all canceled flights Wednesday in the US were on
Southwest, according to the FlightAware tracking service.

Other airlines recovered from ferocious winter storms that hit large swaths
of the country over the weekend, but not Southwest, which scrubbed 2,500
flights Wednesday and 2,300 more on Thursday.
