Problem statement:

What is the effect of nutrients on the growth of microorganisms?

Aim:
To study the effect of nutrients on the growth of microorganisms.

Hypothesis:
Microorganism grow rapidly when nutrient is present.

Variables:
(i) Manipulated variable : Presence of nutrients
(ii) Responding variable : The growth of yeast
(iii) Constant variable : Temperature

Materials and Apparatus:

Glucose solution, yeast, distilled water, conical flask, measuring cylinder, rubber stopper,
delivery tubes, burette and beaker.

Procedure:
1. Two sets of apparatus are set up as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1
2. 20 cm of distilled water is poured into conical flask in set up A and 20 cm3 of glucose
3

solution is poured into conical flask in set up B.

3. 1 spatula of yeast is added into each conical flask.
4. The conical flask A and B are plugged with rubber stopper and delivery tube.
5.The volume of carbon dioxide collected in burette is observed after 30 minutes and recorded.
Results:
Conical flask Type of solution Volume of carbon dioxide released (cm 3)
A Distilled water
B Glucose solution
