1) FOREGROUND OR PUBLIC AREA
THE PARTS SITUATED, OR REPRESENTED AS SITUATED, IN THE FRONT. IT IS THE
CLOSEST THING TO THE VIEWER. PUBLIC SPACE IS KEY TO THE HEALTH OF A
COMMUNITY. WHILE PROVIDING A PLACE FOR THE ACTIVITIES MENTIONED
ABOVE THEY ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO PUBLIC HEALTH BY PROVIDING FRESH AIR
AND A PLACE TO EXERCISE. ACCESS TO PUBLIC SPACE ALSO PROVIDES THE
OPPORTUNITY TO BE AROUND OTHER PEOPLE. HUMANS ARE SOCIAL CREATURES
AND HAVE A INHERENT NEED TO INTERACT. AN ACTIVE PUBLIC SPACE CAN
OFFER THIS INTERACTION.

2) PRIVATE AREA
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT SCALES OF PRIVATE SPACE. THE PRIVATE SPACE OF
YOUR PERSONAL BEDROOM IS QUITE DIFFERENT THAN THE PRIVATE SPACE OF A
CORPORATE OFFICE. HISTORICALLY PRIVATE SPACE HAS BEEN AS SMALL AS A
BED OR AS LARGE AS A CASTLE. EITHER WAY IT OFFERS SECURITY, SAFETY, AND
A PLACE TO REST. THIS MAY BE A SPACE USED FOR WORK, HOBBIES, SELF
REFLECTION OR TO WIND DOWN.

3) PLAY AREA
THIS INSTITUTIONALIZED ENVIRONMENT CONSISTS OF A PLANNED, ENCLOSED
SPACE WITH PLAY EQUIPMENT THAT ENCOURAGES CHILDREN'S MOTOR
DEVELOPMENT. PLAYSPACES SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE. A GREAT
PLAYSPACE WILL PROVIDE PLAY AT GROUND LEVEL; MULTI-SENSORY PLAY
OPPORTUNITIES (SIGHT, SOUND, TOUCH) AND A SAFE SURFACE FOR EVERYONE.

4) SERVICE AREA
IT SUPPLIES EQUIPMENT AND SPACE FOR MAINTENANCE, STORAGE, AND
SERVICE. THIS INCLUDES THE KITCHEN, CLOTHES CARE CENTER, GARAGE OR
CARPORT, UTILITY, AND STORAGE. THE PRINCIPAL USE FOR THE KITCHEN IS
FOOD PREPARATION.

5) BUILDING AREA
THE FLOOR AREA OF BUILDINGS IS THE SUM OF THE AREA OF EACH FLOOR OF
THE BUILDING MEASURED TO THE OUTER SURFACE OF THE OUTER WALLS
INCLUDING THE AREA OF LOBBIES, CELLARS, ELEVATOR SHAFTS AND IN MULTI-
DWELLING BUILDINGS ALL THE COMMON SPACES. AREAS OF BALCONIES ARE
EXCLUDED.

6) ENTOURAGE
THE USAGE OF PEOPLE, AND OTHER INANIMATE OBJECTS IN ARCHITECTURAL
DRAWINGS TO SHOWCASE A SET BUILDING/PROJECT IN OUR REALITY WHICH
HAS TRADITIONALLY BEEN USED TO CONVEY SCALE.
