The Battle of Surabaya

On 10 November, Indonesia celebrates Hari Pahlawan or Heroes Day in

remembrance of the Battle of Surabaya which started on that very date in the year 1945.
The bloody battle took place because Indonesians refused to surrender their weaponry
to British army. British Army at that time was part of the Allied forces. The defiant
Bung Tomo is the well-known revolutionary leader who played a very important role in
this battle.
It all started because of a misunderstanding between British troops in Jakarta
and those in Surabaya, under the command of Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby. Brigadier
Mallaby already had an agreement with Governor of East Java Mr. Surya. The agreement
stated that British would not ask Indonesian troops and militia to surrender their
weapons.
However, a British plane from Jakarta dropped leaflets all over Surabaya. The
leaflet told Indonesians to do otherwise on 27 October 1945. This action angered the
Indonesian troops and militia leaders because they felt betrayed.
On 30 October 1945, Brigadier Mallaby was killed as he was approaching the
British troops‟ post near Jembatan Merah or Red Bridge, Surabaya. There were many
reports about the death, but it was widely believed that the Brigadier was murdered by
Indonesian militia. Looking at this situation, Lieutenant General Sir Philip Christison
brought in reinforcements to siege the city.

ENGLISH MODULE GRADE 10
In the early morning of 10 November 1945, British troops began to advance into
Surabaya with cover from both naval and air bombardment. Although the Indonesians
defended the city heroically, the city was conquered within 3 days and the whole battle
lasted for 3 weeks. In total, between 6,000 and 16,000 Indonesians died while casualties
on the British side were about 600 to 2000.
Battle of Surabaya caused Indonesia to lose weaponry which hampered the
country‟s independence struggle. However, the battle provoked Indonesian and
international mass to rally for the country‟s independence which made this battle
especially important for Indonesian national revolution.

B. J. HABIBIE

Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie known as BJ. Habibie was born on 25

June 1936. He was the Third President of the Republic of Indonesia

(1998–1999). Habibie was born in Parepare, South Sulawesi Province to

Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie and R.A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo. His father

was an agriculturist from Gorontalo of Bugis descent and his mother

was a Javanese noblewoman from Yogyakarta. His parents met while

studying in Bogor. When he was 14 years old, Habibie‟s father died.

Following his father‟s death, Habibie continued his studies in Jakarta and then in

1955 moved to Germany. In 1960, Habibie received a degree in engineering in Germany,

giving him the title Diplom-Ingenieur. He remained in Germany as a research assistant

under Hans Ebner at the Lehrstuhl und Institut für Leichtbau, RWTH Aachen to

conduct research for his doctoral degree.

In 1962, Habibie returned to Indonesia for three months on sick leave. During this

time, he was reacquainted with Hasri Ainun, the daughter of R. Mohamad Besari. The

two married on 12 May 1962, returning to Germany shortly afterwards. Habibie and his

wife settled in Aachen for a short period before moving to Oberforstbach. In May 1963

148
ENGLISH MODULE GRADE 10
they had their first son, Ilham Akbar Habibie, and later another son, Thareq Kemal

Habibie.

When Habibie‟s minimum wage salary forced him into part-time work, he found

employment with the Automotive Marque Talbot, where he became an advisor. Habibie

worked on two projects which received funding from Deutsche Bundesbahn. Due to his

work with Makosh, the head of train constructions offered his position to Habibie upon

his retirement three years later, but Habibie refused.

Habibie did accept a position with Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm in Hamburg.

There, he developed theories on thermodynamics, construction, and aerodynamics

known as the Habibie Factor, Habibie Theorem, and Habibie Method, respectively. He

worked for Messerschmit on the development of the Airbus A-300B aircraft. In 1974, he

was promoted to vice president of the company.

In 1974, Suharto requested Habibie to return to Indonesia as part of Suharto‟s

drive to develop the country. Habibie initially served as a special assistant to Ibnu

Sutowo, the CEO of the state oil company Pertamina. Two years later, in 1976, Habibie

was made Chief Executive Officer of the new state-owned enterprise Industri Pesawat

Terbang Nusantara (IPTN). In 1978, he was appointed as Minister of Research and

Technology. Habibie was elected vice president in March 1998. On 21 May 1998, Suharto

publicly announced his resignation and Habibie was immediately sworn in as president.

Habibie‟s government stabilized the economy in the face of the Asian financial crisis and

the chaos of the last few months of Suharto‟s presidency.

Since relinquishing the presidency, Habibie has spent more time in Germany than

in Indonesia. However, he has also been active as a presidential adviser during Susilo

Bambang Yudoyono‟s presidency. In September 2006, he released a book called Detik-

Detik Yang Menentukan: Jalan Panjang Indonesia Menuju Demokrasi (Decisive

Moments: Indonesia‟s Long Road Towards Democracy). The book recalled the events of

May 1998.

The following text is for question number 4 to 6.

A few years ago, a young school boy was caught in a fire

accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His
mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had
devastated the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he
would be a cripple throughout his life.
However, the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to
be a cripple. Much to be the amazement of the doctor, he did
survive. But unfortunately, from his waist down, he had no motor
ability. His thin legs just dangled there, lifeless. Ultimately he was
discharged from the hospital.
His determination to walk was indomitable. At home, when he was not in bed, he
was confined to a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled
himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the picket fence,
raised himself up and then stake by stake, he began dragging himself along the fence,
his resolve to walk undeterred. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he
would be able to walk unaided. With his iron persistence and his resolute determination,
he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk haltingly, then to walk by himself
and then to run.
He began to walk to school, then run to school, to run for the sheer joy of running.
Later in college he made the track team.
In February 1934, in New York City‟s famed Madison Square Garden, this young man
who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope
to run – this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world‟s fastest
mile.
An epitome of the power of positive thinking and faith in one‟s self, Glenn

Siti Nukatin, better known as NH Dini, has died at
Elizabeth Hospital Semarang, Central Java, on Tuesday,

Goenawan Mohamad confirmed the news through his Twitter account. “NH Dini
has died. The 1936-born novelist is a prominent writer of the generation who first
appeared in the Kisah magazine. Her works: Pada Sebuah Kapal, Namaku Hiroko. May
she rest in peace," Goenawan wrote, adding that Dini has died in a car accident.
Born in Semarang on February 29, 1936, Dini has been diligently writing since she
was in grade 3. Her career in the national-level writing began when she sent a poem to
a radio program “Prosa Berirama” (Rhythmic Prose), which was broadcasted by Radio
Republik Indonesia (RRI), before trying her luck in making short stories for the
women‟s magazine, Femina.
Dini began writing long stories since she felt that the short story format was not
suitable for her. She began writing her first work entitled "Hati yang Damai", then
"Pertemuan Dua Hati" (1986) published in Femina.
NH Dini was considered central as a pioneer of women‟s voices in the 1960s-1980s
when not many Indonesian women decided to become writers. “Literature is my world.
I have been in this field for 60 years, and I hope to continue to contribute to
Indonesian literature,” said the feminist just before receiving the award.
Almost being forgotten, the writer's name resurfaced when her son Pierre Louis
Padang became the talk of the world due to characters of Minions in the Despicable
Me 1, Despicable Me 2, and Minions film.
Pierre Louis Padang, better known as Pierre Coffin, and Marie Claire Lintang
were the children of Dini and French diplomat Yves Coffin. The couple who married
in 1960 decided to divorce in 1984. Padang and Lintang then chose to live with their
father.
NH Dini is planned to be buried at Harapan Asri Elderly House, Semarang. Her
