Using passive voice for formal sentences

What sounds more formal?

• Something must be done to change this.


• The exams will be marked this weekend.

We use passive to make sentences more formal and less personal, and to emphasise the object.

Exercise 1

Try to form similar passive sentences from the following active sentences:

1.They will do their homework.


2.I will tell you when the results are ready.
3.The janitor will clean up the mess in the toilet.
4.We must find the man who broke the window.
5.Let the students know we will punish them for cheating.
6.We will reward whoever hands in the stolen purse.
7.I will give you a prize if you do well in the test.
8.I will send you the new timetable next week.
9.Give your completed applications to the main office.
10.We will give assistance to students with learning difficulties.
