a. Course Description
This course will introduce you to the Indian philosophical tradition through the study of philosophical concepts such
as Vedas’ Upanishads, Rna, Rta, verna and ashram system, atman, Jyanmimamsa, Bhagwat Gita etc. You'll grapple
with questions that have been significant to philosophy from its beginnings: Questions about the nature of the Indian
philosophy, nature of cosmos, the existence of self, the foundations of knowledge, and the good life. You'll also
observe changes of intellectual outlook over time, and the effect of religious, and philosophical concerns on the
development of philosophical ideas.
One of the aims of this course is to introduce you to some of the cultural, ethical perspective and themes from the
history of philosophy. But another important aim of this course is to develop your skill at the kind of reading,
writing, thinking, and speaking called for when working on the history of philosophy. There is a historical
component to this latter aim: You'll learn to read historical texts closely and carefully. It will be also guided towards,
and supported in, the development of your own informed opinions and positions on contemporary issues that of
virtues: Ground the ethical use and development of morals within historical contexts; Examine the proposition of
looking at ethics and morals through Indian philosophical lenses; Examine ontological impacts of philosophy on
human existence; Examine ideas surrounding citizenship; Examine ethical issues raised in specific cases of human
life use gone awry; Debate the prospect of limits on individuals existence; and Discuss considerations surrounding
in a society
