demands attention to detail to prevent some
of the debilitating complications that can
ensue. It is a comprehensive review of all that
can and does go wrong in this surgical spe-
cialty and presents solutions. PURPOSE:
Complications are an inevitable consequence
of surgery. This book is the first of its kind to
address adverse surgical outcomes in this
part of the human anatomy. The book ad-
dresses the ‘‘anatomy’’ of a surgical compli-
cation, but then details the steps necessary to
help correct the problem, something that
most surgical books on foot and ankle sur-
gery only touch upon. This is what makes the
book unique. AUDIENCE: The book is
particularly aimed at practicing and experi-
enced surgeons. It will be of use to trainees
too, either in residency or at the specialty stage
of their surgical training. Others, such as stu-
dents and general practitioners, may find the
book to be of some use in helping to under-
stand the complexity of the adverse outcome
to their patients_ surgery, but the book is
aimed primarily at those who operate. The
lead editors are well recognized in the field of
podiatric foot and ankle surgery, and many of
the big names are among the nearly 50 con-
tributing authors. FEATURES: The book is
well illustrated and organized, with plenty of
high-quality prints and plates, which are

ters are divided into five parts, covering not
just the specific complications of the various
types of operations for each foot part (fore-
foot, first ray, hindfoot, and ankle), but also
the all-important perioperative complications,
including infections and venous thromboem-
bolism. In particular, the latter is well presented
and in line with current trends. Perhaps the only
shortcoming is the lack of orthopedic contri-
butions. This may in part be due to the great
strides made by podiatric surgeons in the past
50 years in the United States and reflect the
volume of foot and ankle surgery that they
perform in comparison to other surgical
specialties, but it would be nice to see more
collaboration in this area in the future.
ASSESSMENT: As a standalone book on
this topic, this is a very worthy contribution
to the field of foot and ankle surgery. There is
nothing that even comes close to it for com-
parison purposes. Complications are usually
addressed as a summary of what can go wrong
in surgery books on the foot and ankle. This
book addresses what went wrong, why, and,
most importantly, how to attempt to fix it. It
is an essential reading material for all prac-
ticing surgeons of the foot and ankle, regard-
less of degree, and required for all medical
libraries in institutions with training pro-
grams. Very highly recommended!

DESCRIPTION: This is a critically impor-
tant book for providers across multiple spe-
cialties who care for patients with injuries or
athletes with medical problems. It includes
how to approach patients and take a history,
decision-making strategies, and detailed pho-
tographs of physical examination skills and
physical therapy exercises. The previous edi-
tion was published in 2011. PURPOSE: The
purpose is to help clinicians care for sports
medicine patients. The authors meet the ob-
jectives with this thorough yet focused guide.
AUDIENCE: Written for clinicians who care
for patients with musculoskeletal issues, the
book is appropriate for students, residents, and
physicians. These clinicians include primary
care sports medicine providers, orthopedists,
primary care providers (family medicine, in-
ternal medicine, pediatrics, and emergency
medicine). The information is relevant in out-
patient clinics, urgent care settings, and emer-
gency departments. FEATURES: The book
covers fundamental principles of assessing
sports injuries, history taking, and making a
diagnosis. It covers the breadth of all body re-
gions for sports medicine injuries from con-
cussions to foot pain. In addition, it offers
guidance for practical application and wisdom
for managing military, younger athletes, and
the unique challenges facing team physicians.
ASSESSMENT: This is an authoritative book
of the highest caliber. It is incredibly useful for
directly improving clinical care of patients and
is applicable immediately to the daily work of
caring for patients. This is a welcome update,
with extensive additions that include new
evidence-based medicine principles and new
chapters, particularly on pain, core stability,
training, and return to sport.
