ZWO EAF to GSO Crayford focuser installation guide

3D printed
Adapter (0.2 layer height, 20% or more infill, 4 perimeters, 4 top/bottom layers.) Supports are required
for the recessed groove of the bracket.

NOTE: I used PLA+ filament as that should be fine out in the sun. The other option would be to use
PETG as regular PLA may get too soft out in the sun for an extended period of time.

Hardware
(2) M4 x 16 button head hex bolt - used to replace the locking knob and also hold the bracket in place.
(1) M4 washer for the M4 x 16 used to attach the bracket to the adapter.
(1) M4 nut - this will be press fit into the printed adapter.
(2) M3 x 8 button head hex bolt + 3mm washer - used to help attach the bracket to the adapter.
(1) M4 x 25 set screw - used to replace the existing focus tension set screw or knob.
(1) M4 knurled thumb nut - used to attach the bracket to the adapter using the M4 set screw.
(1) 5mm x 4mm flex coupler that will need the 4mm opening enlarged slightly - there's one in the EAF
kit though I had some on hand and opted not to modify the one from the kit as all original could be a
selling point if the EAF is ever replaced or the focuser is upgraded.

Misc Tools
Various Allen wrenches for the button head hex bolts and to tighten the coupler to the EAF & focuser
shaft.
11/64 drill bit to open up the 4mm side of the coupler just enough for it to fit the focuser shaft.

Installation process
1) Remove the single speed focus knob.
2) Remove the focuser lock if it's installed.
3) Remove the focuser tension screw - be sure to use caution as the focuser draw tube will no longer
be held in place. On the Lunt this is a set screw while on the GSO this is a knob. Either way, this will
be replaced with the M4 x 25 set screw.
4) Place the printed adapter over the focuser - the holes in the adapter for the focus lock and focus
tension should line up with their counterparts.
5) Install the adapter using one of the M4 x 16 button head hex bolts in the focus lock location.
6) Install the M4 x 25 set screw so it's snug - this keeps pressure on the draw tube and final tightening
can be done later.
7) Install the aluminum bracket that came with the kit - it may be finicky but the M4 x 25 needs to be in
the 2nd set of slotted holes on the bracket and the bottom of the bracket should fit the groove in
the adapter. If need be, the set screw can be installed/tightened after the bracket is in place as long
as it is in the correct slot.
8) Install the M4 x 16 button head hex bolt + washer by lining it up with the press fit M4 nut.
9) Install the M3 button head hex bolts + washers at the end of the adapter - these are just threaded
into the printed part and should be plenty strong as the M4 button head just installed does the bulk
of the work on holding the aluminum bracket in place.
10) Install the knurled knob onto the M4 x 25 set screw.
11) Drill out the 4mm side of the coupler so the focus shaft will fit. Be sure the set screws in the coupler
are backed out enough so they don't interfere with the drill bit. The other option is to use a larger
coupler and print a shim that will fit. However drilling it out should be more than sufficient as it will
only be a few thousandths over.
12) Slip the coupler onto the focuser shaft and tighten it down.
13) Check the EAF fits and make any adjustments needed to the bracket to gain access to the mounting
holes on the EAF - it may also be necessary to loosen the bracket to get it properly positioned with
the coupler. Once it's all aligned then snug up the M3 & M4 button head hex bolts The M4 can be
decently tightened as that uses a nut on the backside to hold the bracket to the adapter. The M3
bolts should only need to be snugged up.

At this point the EAF may be plugged in using the supplied cable from the kit. This is to confirm it works
and that the draw tube actually moves. I did my testing with FireCapture but the ASCOM driver for the
EAF will need to be installed first.

Notes
If the draw tube slips then loosen the knurled knob and tighten down the M4 x 25 set screw a bit at a
time. Once the focuser tension is correct and the draw tube no longer slips then snug down the knurled
knob again and everything should be good to go. Finger tight should be all that is required on the
knurled knob.

Access to the lock screw is no longer possible but the EAF will hold the shaft in place so the focus lock
should no longer be necessary as long as the focuser tension has been set correctly.

With the EAF installed it is no longer possible to focus manually so it's a good idea to have the optional
focus paddle on hand. The other option is to use whatever application you prefer and set focus that
way.

Place the removed parts into a clearly labeled baggie in order to return the focuser to stock in case it's
ever needed.
