Title: preparation of ammonium nitrate

Objective: to prepare ammonium nitrate fertilizer by mixing equivalent amounts of ammonia

and nitric acid

Materials required: Ammonium solution, dilute nitric acid, a beaker, a conical flask, graduated
cylinder, phenolphthalein dropper evaporating dish a brute wire gauze tripod Bunsen burner
stand and a clamp.

Procedure:

1. first, we measured 10 ml of ammonium solution pour it into a conical flask and add a
few drops of phenolphalein using a dropper.
2. Second, we Fixed the burette to the stand with a clamp
3. Third, we poured dilute nitric acid into a beaker and then transferred it into the beaker
4. Fourth, we placed the conical flask containing ammonia solution below the burette open
the stop cock of the burette so that the nitric acid slowly shaking the conical flask until
the color o the solution in the flask disappears.
5. Fifth, when the colored disappeared, we closed the stop clock and transfer the solution
in the flask into an evaporating dish.
6. Sixth, put the evaporating dish on the wire gaze placed on the tripod and heat it gently
on Bunsen burner flame to dryness and observe.
7. At last, we recorded our observation and analysis

Observation and analysis

1. What color did you observe when you added the phenolphthalein?

Pink

2. What color did you observe in the step 4?

Stated to become color less

3. Id their a substance left in the evaporating dish when the solution was heated to
dryness?
Yes, there was a white crystalline substance that is commonly known as the Ammonia nitrate

4. Write the chemical equation for the experiment

NH4 + HNO3--------------------> NH4NO3
