team you will end up liking it.
It has been 61 years since the founding of Club Universidad Nacional AC, popularly known as Pumas de la
UNAM.

In the 1930s, Rector Luis Chico Goerne promoted the idea of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
having an amateur soccer team in the Federal District league, although the proposal was rejected.

It was not until 1940, during the administration of Rector Gustavo Baz, that a university squad was formed
with young people from the various faculties of the UNAM, under the command and coaching of Rodolfo
Muñoz, a Costa Rican player from Club España.

However, the feline squad still had an identity, two more years had to pass before the then American soccer
coach, Roberto "El Tapatío" Méndez baptized the student team with the nickname "Pumas" for representing
agility, strength, courage and aggressiveness, characteristics that fascinated Club Universidad to be
represented.

Up to this point, the university team continued in the amateur league until August 2, 1954, when it finally
entered the second division, thanks to the efforts of Rector Nabor Carrillo and the collaboration of "El Puma"
Varela and Guillermo Aguilar Álvarez, who would later be named president of the club.

The promotion to first division would come in 1962, with a 5-1 win over Cataluña de Torreón, under the
direction of Octavio Vidal, this would be the first step towards becoming one of the five most representative
teams in national soccer.

In the 70's, the Club would be dressed in glory by winning its first title, which would be achieved in the 1976-
77 season.
For this to happen, Club Pumas' ranks were swollen with personalities who injected heart and soul, such as
Miguel Mejía Barón, Bora Milutinovic, Héctor Sanabria, José Luis "Pareja" López, Arturo Vázquez Ayala,
Ángel Zubieta, Leonardo Cuéllar, Cabinho and, of course, Hugo Sánchez.

At this time, the Asociación Civil Club Universidad Nacional was created, made up of several graduates to
manage the team, because the team needed more resources than UNAM could provide for its maintenance.

In the 1976-77 season, in addition to achieving super leadership, the feline squad won its first championship
by defeating the Leones Negros of the U. de G. with a goalless draw in the first leg and a 1-0 score in C.U.
The following two seasons they managed to reach the final but unfortunately were unable to win the titles.

In the 1980-81 season, Bora Milutinovic's Pumas once again lifted the championship trophy after defeating
Cruz Azul in the final with a 4-2 aggregate score. The team had finished the regular season in second place in
the overall standings.

However, 10 more years had to pass for the Pumas of the UNAM to obtain glory again, this time against the
most hated rival, América, against whom they had lost a final in 1985 and another in 1988.

Undoubtedly the best in the minds of the university students is still present today, the free kick executed
masterfully by Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti, which meant the third league championship for Pumas.
The feline squad would leave its passionate fans in suspense for several years, until the arrival of Hugo
Sánchez, who made Pumas the only team, up to that date, to achieve a two-time championship in short
tournaments, implemented in 1996.

For many Auriazules fans, 2004 will be a unique year in the Club's history, as the Clausura
and Apertura trophies were won by Club Universidad after defeating Chivas and
Monterrey, respectively.

Later, in 2007, "Tuca" obtained a runner-up finish after losing in the final against Atlante.
However, thanks to continuity, with an austere and humble plan, the Brazilian managed to
put together a team that, based on grit, heart and good play, was crowned in the 2009
Clausura to draw the sixth star in the history of this great institution.

The last title won by Club Universidad was in the 2011 Clausura Tournament with a 3-2
aggregate victory over Monarcas Morelia.

This seventh crown consolidated Pumas as

the fifth winningest team in the history of Mexican professional soccer.
