Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background.

Introduction:

The productivity of a worker, vendor, human, or someone who typically uses human
power to complete a job or labor is one of the most important aspects to consider while
attempting to increase the working output, outcomes, and results. Productivity refers to the
economic or productive performance that characterizes the efficacy of a worker. A worker's
degree of comfort or ergonomics has an impact on the efficiency of an activity. Ergonomics
refers to the science that focuses on planning, constructing, and organizing elements that
impact a person's comfort. In other words, ergonomics is concerned with optimizing the
efficiency and comfort of the human working environment.
Numerous employees suffer from various musculoskeletal problems, such as
persistent low back pain, neck discomfort, and other pain connected with excessive force use
in the workplace. Vendors that use non-ergonomic carts often experience the ailments. A cart
is described as an open, human-powered vehicle capable of transporting, carrying, and
holding goods. In the Philippines, a cart, or kariton, is a basic pushcart constructed from
discarded materials such as wood, metal, and rusted roofing. It is often seen at public markets,
where it is used to sold various products by a vendor called tindero or tindera. Observations
revealed that some market merchants use carts that do not fulfill ergonomic requirements,
while others do not have personal carts to carry, hold, and display their items in the market.
The researcher sought a participant for the investigation. It turns out that the study's
recipient has difficulty carrying her goods. On her route to the market, she is precisely 2.1
kilometers from her house. According to her account, she is simply transporting things from
RP Gulod Novaliches to the entrance of Puregold Novaliches, which is located next to the
Diocesan Shrine and Our Lady of Mercy Parish. In addition, she noted that her age causes
her to have temporary muscular soreness while carrying the merchandise. The aim of this
study is to construct an ergonomic cart with the objectives of [1] advancing understanding

of ergonomic issues and [2] determining the difference between having no cart and an
ergonomic cart as a vendor.[3] Make use of the vendor's ergonomic considerations for the
human body; [4] construct and create an ergonomic cart; and [5] donate to the recipient.

Profile of Beneficiary:

I. Personal Profile of the Beneficiary

Name: Evelyn Soliman

Gender: Female
Age: 50 years old
Residing at: RP Gulod Novaliches
Working area: In front of Puregold Novaliches.

II. Brief Background of the Beneficiary

Mrs. Evelyn Soliman sells veggies and spices. She is one of the vendors who does not
have a cart and is positioned on the sidewalk in Novaliches, Quezon City, notably in front of the
Puregold Novaliches in the driveway. She has been a vendor for ten (10) years, and it is a difficult
and stressful job for her, especially when she has to convey her stuff from the RP Gulod
Novaliches all the way to the Novaliches. According to her, she occasionally walks from her
home to the market with her products. According to estimates, she spent at least P72 and no more
than P100 traveling from her home to the market. Every day, she carries more than 8 kilograms
of goods on her shoulder. Her timetable is determined by the weather and the market's location.
Her goal, she explained, is to increase the number of things carried in the ergonomic cart. The
cart would allow her to improve her income, get a more efficient market position, and carry things
much more easily.

III. Problems encountered of the Beneficiary

Mrs. Evelyn, a market seller for the last two years, told the researcher that
transportation is one of her difficulties in the market profession. She opted to convey her goods
on foot in order to save money. Shoulder and hand discomfort are among the difficulties she
suffers as a result of these conditions. As she exclusively sells on the sidewalk of the market,
she continues to struggle with packing her wares; if she wishes to change locations, she will
likely take some time to pack her products before moving to the new location. She is also
contemplating selling more items, such as fruits and vegetables, to optimize her earnings.
Nonetheless, the challenges faced by the Beneficiary are outlined below:
1. Transportation of 8kg products from home to market place
2. Physical Discomfort from carrying heavy product Increase to the quantity of
the product
3. Transferring Selling point location of the beneficiary

Objective of the Study:

The goal of the study is to design and build a cart that is likely to meet the proper level
of anthropometric data for the beneficiary. This would reduce awkward postures. However,
the study aims to reduce the beneficiary's discomfort and show the advantages of the
ergonomic cart in her working environment. Explicitly, the study aims at the following:

1. To make the ergonomic cart's user to feel more comfort, reduce physical pains
that can slow them down.
2. To reduce any physical stress or fatigue and make the person's life better.
3. Extend and explore the study of ergonomics in the public.
4. Promote a safe working environment.
5. Make a cart that is comfortable to use and fits the person who will be using.

Scope and Limitation

This study is focusing on how the researchers of Quezon City University will upgrade
the push cart to become ergonomically designed. The researchers' goal is to design an ergonomic
push cart that suits the beneficiary and can be used for peddling and transporting goods and
products in the market.

The cart is exclusively designed based on the anthropometric data of the beneficiary for
her easy storage of goods or products and proper and comfortable use of the cart. This study is
only limited to 1 beneficiary, who must be a vendor or someone who really needs a cart for
everyday work and should be eligible.

The researchers will go to various places around Novaliches to gather facts and
information about which beneficiary will be chosen in the study. During the last term of the
semester for the school year 2022-2023, this research will be done.

It was comprised entirely of wood. has a weight of 20 kg and a weight capacitance of 100 kg. It
also supports four tires with a lock-out mechanism for stability when the recipient wishes to remain
in motion. Each tire has a tire capacity of one hundred (100) kg. Finally, the product is designed
ergonomically, which means the cart is tailored to the user.

Actual Picture of the Cart

Figure: #3 : Actual Picture of the Cart

The image shown above is the real image of the cart or the study's conclusion. The
researcher selected wood as the primary material based on the vendor's advice and our own
ergonomic factors. If the metal material is used, the vendor will not be able to push the cart in
an ergonomic manner. To make the material more durable and boost its water resistance, the
researcher opted to coat the wood with plastic varnish. The water-resistant properties of the
plastic varnish would make the ergonomic cart look better and make it last longer.
The ergonomic cart is exclusively designed for beneficiaries with a toe-to-elbow
measurement of 99 cm. It is based on the anthropometric data of the recipient of the research.
To make it even more ergonomic, the manufacturing team chose to include "foam," or a hand

Safety concerns
ERGONOMIC HAZARDS

The main areas of concern for ergonomic hazards include:

 lifting, pushing, and pulling (manual handling)

The beneficiary will be using the pushing cart that will be given to her to peddle
her products specifically fruits. Since she will be peddling in a long period of time she
will go to many places and so she will be more exposed in pushing the cart in a long
period of time. The beneficiary will do repetitive pushing activity that can lead her to
acquire Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs).

PHYSICAL HAZARDS

The main factors and conditions associated with physical hazards include:

 Body stressing

Body stressing is a collective term covering a broad range of health problems associated
with repetitive and strenuous work. sprains and strains of muscles, ligaments, and
tendons.

1. back injuries
2. joint and bone injuries or degeneration
3. nerve injuries or compression, or
4. chronic pain.

 Noise

Excessive noise can lead to temporary or permanent hearing loss or tinnitus

(ringing in the ears). It can also affect psychological health including anxiety, depression,
fatigue, sleeplessness, memory, and decision making.

According to her account, she transports at least 8 to 10 kilograms of product from RP
Novaliches to Novaliches near Puregold Novaliches, a distance of more than 2 kilometers. She
has been doing this for about three years, and she also complains of sore shoulders and feet.
Since her shoulder takes the majority of the product's weight, it may cause tissue injury to her
shoulder as well as to some of the tissues in her feet. She also said that her personal luggage
had items such as cash, towels, and other items. If she has different weights on each shoulder,
she might end up with an unstable posture that makes it hard for her to move her goods quickly.
