Rationale

The student's perspective about propaganda is often associated with negativity. This is
due to the fact that most cases of propaganda being spread in social media platforms like
Facebook contain information that is manipulated and exaggerated. Additionally, it is a platform
where rapid dissemination of information takes place. This causes the students to give credence
to false information without verifying it. As a result, the information being spread can tarnish
one’s reputation in just a groundless thought that doesn’t provide concrete evidence.
Furthermore, posting negative propaganda in social media platforms like Facebook creates a
massive influence in forming public opinion.

In its origins “propaganda” is an ancient and honourable word. Religious activities which
were associated with propaganda commanded the respectful attention of mankind. It was in later
times that the word came to have a selfish, dishonest, or subversive association. In this study, we
are raising awareness about negative propaganda on the senior high school students of San
Pedro College and the factors identifying it. The expected outcomes of this concept paper are to
inform and enlighten the Senior High School students about negative propaganda. This concept
paper will help them realize the significance of authenticating information before believing and
sharing it on social media platforms like Facebook.

Background and Purpose

Propaganda in this generation is modernized. It has been used since the 17th century and
during World War I, fascism and communism were present, patriots and loyalists have been
using propaganda to rally and convince colonizers to have conflict between the nations.
Propaganda in the Philippines started around 1880 to 1898 before the Philippine Revolution
began.

In social media platforms like Facebook, where everyone can easily repost and share
contents, propaganda can disseminate quickly because it attracts the attention of the students.
An article from BBC states that the ability to spread widely on social media means a slice of the
advertising revenue that comes from clicks as people follow the links to their webpages. This
indicates how far one information can spread through a click. Through the rapid dissemination
of false information, it can make the society more vulnerable to disinformation (Connor and
Weatherall, 2019). Furthermore, a research article from sage journals also states that mere
exposure through propaganda is assumed to be enough to cause suitable perception and
behaviour. Examples include: it persuades the citizens to engage in a protest, to disrupt stability,
and vote differently.

In conclusion, our study is significant because the ones that will benefit from our
advocacy are the senior high school department. They can apply our advocacy as they can be our
future leaders. So as early as now, through our study, they can practice safe and positive
propaganda that is free from manipulation and negativity.
Project Description

This advocacy promotes teaching and giving awareness to Senior High School students
on negative propaganda and what are the factors in identifying it through the use of social media
platforms like Facebook.  We will also make an informative video containing the details about
our advocacy. Furthermore, this advocacy can indirectly influence people like their friends,
family, and peers. The thing that makes this advocacy unique from others is that we will be
inviting Atty. John Rex Laudiangco, a spokesperson from the Commission on Elections to tackle
the factors identifying negative propaganda.

This advocacy aims to answer the question: (1) What makes a propaganda a negative
propaganda? (2) What are the negative sociological factors brought by negative propaganda? (3)
What is the importance of this advocacy in being a responsible student? (4) How can the
students apply their learning from this advocacy in their daily lives?

To raise awareness in identifying negative propaganda, we intend to:

 Make a short informative video that explains our advocacy.
 Invite Atty. John Rex Laudiangco from the Commission on Elections to conduct a seminar
about the factors identifying negative propaganda.
 Post infographic contents on our Facebook page.

To begin our advocacy, we will first make a Google form to ask the students their
questions of understanding about negative propaganda. Second, we will be holding a seminar
where  Atty. John Rex Laudiangco, a spokesperson from the Commission on Elections,  will talk
about factors identifying negative propaganda and after that we would raise the questions we
accumulated from the students so that it will be answered one by one. Third, during the seminar,
we would take down notes as it will serve the infographic content that we will be posting on our
Facebook page. Fourth, we will be posting an informative video advocacy on our Facebook page
that explains and promotes our advocacy so that it will indirectly influence other people aside
from the students. Lastly, to evaluate our advocacy’s efficiency to the Senior High School
students of San Pedro College, we will be conducting a quantitative analysis such as survey
questions. These questions would measure the impacts of our advocacy to the students and
suggestions on what we should improve in our project. The survey questions will be posted on
our Facebook page.

Our major milestone is to post infographic contents on our Facebook page, hold a
seminar on the Senior High School department at San Pedro College and to make informative
video content that is in line with our advocacy.

The expected result of our advocacy is that the students will apply their learning and be
knowledgeable about negative propaganda. This advocacy will help them be aware of negative
propaganda and stop it from further destroying other people’s image and causing division.  It is
important for them to know this advocacy so that they will become responsible students and
spread only accurate information. These students are the future; they will be able to create a
better community without toxicity and negativity. The primary target group for this study will be
Senior High School students at San Pedro College Main Campus. To add more, we also expect
that this advocacy will disseminate so that more Filipinos will be knowledgeable of negative
propaganda.
