2. AIM OF THE PROJECT:

To Study the Effect of Salt On

seed germination.
3. A. APPARATUS USED
Plastic bags ( Ziplock bags)
Coffee filters /Cotton
Beakers

3. B. MATERIALS USED
200 SEEDS
Tap water
Distilled water
Salt
4. PRINCIPLE

Salinity is a major environmental factor

which affects the germination of
seeds.The seed germination decreases as
the amount of salt in water increases.
Some plants can grow in saline
water.These are called halophytes and
are appropriately adapted to their
habitat.
5. PROCEDURE FOLLOWED
1.Take 10 beakers and label them A –J.
Make the following solutions in each
beaker.
Beaker A: 50 ML tap water
Beaker B: 50ML distilled water
Beaker C : 50ML distilled water + 1g salt
BeakerD:50 ML distilled water+1.5g salt
Beaker E:50 ML distilled water + 2g salt
Beaker F:50ML distilled water +2.5g salt
Beaker G:50ML distilled water +3g salt
BeakerH:50ML distilled water +3.5g salt
Beaker I: 50ML distilled +4g salt
Beaker J:50ML distilled water 4.5 g salt
2. Label the 10 plastic bags A-J and place them on
the table at room temperature.
3.Place one coffee filter/cotton in each of the
plastic bags.
4. Now,pour 5ML of each solution corresponding
to the labels till the entire coffee filter is
completely soaked.
5. Put 20 seeds ,scattered evenly, on each of the
filter and zip up the bags.
6. Place all the bags at the room temperature and
away from direct sunlight.
7. Observe the seeds for 10 days
8. Record your observations.
6. OBSERVATION
The observation are noted in the table
given below:

SOLUTIONS Number of Seeds Germinated Total Seeds

DAY DAY DAY DAY DAY DAY DAY DAY DAY DAY DAY
1 2 3 4 5 6 6 7 8 9 10

7. RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Tap water and distilled water without salt in them

acted as controls and the rest of the solutions were
the experimental. The controls showed 100% seed
germination but the solutions containing salt
showed varied germination. It was found that as the
concentration of salt increased the percentage of
seed germination decreased. There was no
germination observed in the bags I and J.
