BELLIS PERENNIS

• Synonyms : Daisy, wound wort, bruised wort.

• Natural Order : Compositae.

• Part Used : The whole fresh plant.

• Habitat : It is native to Europe, and western Asia and introduced

in north and south Africa, Now it is distributed throughout world.

PROVER - This drug was proved by Dr Burnett.

▪ DESCRIPTION -

A perennial herb upto 1m in height. Leaves forming a basal tuft ,


spathulate or obovate, 2.5 cm long, narrowed into margined petioles,
slightly toothed, pubescent, mid-rib broad. Inflorescence a head. Heads
solitary, 2.5 to 5 cm across on hairy peduncles; involucral bracts oblong,
obtuse hairy; rays numerous, linear, white or rosy, wholly or partly red
and often incurved or relaxed or quilled. Rootstock short, fibrous and
stout.

▪ CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS –

Constituents include triterpenoidsaponins, several anthocyanins,


flavonoids and polyacetylenes.

▪ TRADITIONAL USE –

The flowers and young leaves were used as a vegetable . The plants was
used traditionally as an expectorant, diuretic , anti –inflammatory,
antipyretic , vulnerary, antispasmodic, astringent, pothalmic,
homeostatic. It was also used in the treatment of common cold,
stomach ache, eye diseases, eczema, skin boils, gastritis, enteritis,

diarrhea, bleeding, rheumatism, inflammation and infection of the


upper respiratory tract.

▪ SPHERE OF ACTION -

It acts upon the muscular fibres of the blood vessels. Marked muscular
soreness. Lameness, as if sprained. Venous congestion, due to
mechanical caused. First remedy for injuries to the deeper tissues, after
major surgical intervestions. Results of injuries to the nerves with
intense soreness and intolerance to cold bathing. After gout, debility of
limbs. Traumatism of pelvic organs and auto-traumatism express the
conditions calling for this remedy; ill-effects for masturbations.
Excellent remedy for sprains and bruises. Complaints due to cold food
or drink when the body is heated, and in affections due to cold wind.
Externally, in nevi. Acne, Boils all over. Sore, bruised feeling in the
pelvic region. Exudations, stasis, swelling come within the range of this
remedy. Rheumatic symptoms. Does not vitiate the secretions.

Burnett says “It is the princely remedy for old labourers, especially
gardeners.”

▪ CLINICAL:

Acne, Boils, Indigestion, Masturbation, Overwork, Pregnancy-


complaints of Railway spine, Rheumatism, Stasis, Traumatism,
Varicosis.

▪ GUIDING SYMPTOMS –

• Bellis Per. is the first remedy in injuries to the deeper tissues, after
major surgical work.
• “Stasis & fag”-is the keynote of the remedy. Exudation, stasis,
swellings of all kinds, varicose veins, engorgement of breast and
uterus, cerebral stasis etc. all come within the range of this
remedy.
• Traumatism-of the pelvic organs with sore, bruised feeling I the
pelvic region. Autotraumatism such as ill effectsor fag from
masturbation. It is also indicated in the condition for sprains and
bruises. It is also indicated in condition like RAILWAY SPINE i.e.
Traumatic neurosis.

▪ PARTICULARS –

Head - Vertigo in elderly people. Headache from occiput to top of head.


Forehead feels contracted. Bruised soreness. Itching around scalp and
over back, worse from hot bath and bed.

Eyes –

It has been observed to cause dilatation of the pupil when used locally.

Face -

Eruptions: herpetic, allergic, acne, cystic.

Mouth -

Abscess of roots of teeth.

Stomach -

Effects of cold or iced drinks when heated, dyspepsia, diarrhea.

Want of appetite.

Slight nausea.

Pain while lying.

Aversion to sweets.

Desire for: meat, raw onions, vinegar.

Sleep - Wakes early in morning and cannot get to sleep again.

Abdomen - Soreness of abdominal walls and of uterus. Stitches in


spleen, sore, enlarged. Yellow, painless diarrhœa, foul odor, worse at
night. Bloated; rumbling in bowels.

Skin - Boils. Ecchymosis, swelling, very sensitive to touch. Venous


congestion due to mechanical causes. Varicose veins with bruised sore
feeling. Exudations and swellings. Acne.

Back -

Injuries of the spine – coccyx.

Pain in back as from a fall on coccyx.

Pain in back on lying on abdomen.

Female - Breasts and uterus engorged. Varicose veins in pregnancy.


During pregnancy inability to walk. Abdominal muscles lame. Uterus
feels sore, as if squeezed.

Urinary organs - Urination difficult, involuntary while lying.

Extremities - Joints sore, muscular soreness. Itching on back and flexor


surfaces of thighs. Pain down anterior of thighs. Wrist feels contracted
as from elastic band around joint. Sprains feels contracted as from
elastic band around joint. Sprains with great soreness. Railway spine.

RELATIONSHIP –

Compare: Arnica; Arsenic; Staphis; Hamamelis; Bryonia; Vanadium


(degenerative states).

MODALITIES –

Worse, left side; hot bath and warmth of bed; before storms; cold
bathing; cold wind.

Worse around 3 p.m. or 3 a.m. and for a few hours after that time is
another characteristic.

DOSE - Tincture to third potency.
