III. Firm-up

Momentum is the force needed to produce a change in body’s motion through a combination of
changes in its mass and velocity. Momentum involves motion. To have momentum an object
must be moving at a certain velocity. Momentum involves mass. The more massive an object is,
the more difficult to change object’s state immediately. The greater the object’s mass and
velocity, the greater its momentum.

Newton’s Law of Inertia defines what happens to the motion of a body when force is
absent on the body. Recall that when a force acts on a body, there is a change in the body’s
motion. This change is measured using the equation which gets the products of its mass (m) and
velocity (v). This quantity is known as the body’s momentum (p).

p=m.v
Since, Velocity is a vector quantity. Momentum is also a vector quantity.
On the other hand, Impulse is the force needed to produce a change in the body’s
momentum through a combination of changes in its mass and velocity. We can get the definition
of impulse from Newton’s Second Law of Motion, stated as F= m(a). Since Acceleration is
change in velocity over change in time. Hence, the equation for impulse can be written as:

F ∆ t=∆ p
Where F ∆ t is the impulse in newton-second (N-s), and ∆ p is the change in momentum in kg-
m/s.

Momentum

1. A baseball of mass 0.14 kg is moving at 35 m/s. Find the momentum of the baseball.

Given : m= 0.14 kg, v= 35 m/s

Unknown : p=?
Equation : p=mv
Solution : p=mv = (0.14 kg) (35 m/s) = 4.90 kg.m/s

2. An object with mass of 35kg has its velocity change from 15m/s to 7m/s east. Find
the object change in momentum.

Given:

Mass = 35kg
Vi = 15m/s
Vf = 7m/s
U = change p
E = m . v (vf – vi)
Solution:

p = m. v
P = (35kg) (7m/s -15m/s)
P = (35kg) (-8m/s)
P = - 280kg.m/s

Impulse

1. A force of 2.0 n is applied to a baseball for 3.0s. Calculate the impulse.

Given : F= 2.0 N, t= 3.0 s

Unknown : i=?
Equation : F∆t
Solution : F∆t = (2.0 N) (3.0 s) = 6.0 N-s

2. A 50 force to 60kg object to change its velocity from 9m/s east to 3m/s east. What is
the impulse experience by object in Ns?

Force = 50N
Mass = 60kg
Vi = 9m/s
Vf = 3m/s
U = impulse
E = F. Δt (vf – vi)
F
m

Solution:

Δt = (vf – vi)
F
M

Δt = (3m/s – 9m/s)
50N
60kg
Δt = - 6m/s
0.83 m/s2

Δt = - 7.23s
I = F. Δt
I = (50N) (-7,23s)
I = -361.50Ns

DAYS (April 4, 2022 / April 5, 2022)

IV. Deepen (Synchronous)

Activity Title: Impulse and Momentum

Learning Target: Solve problems under impulse and momentum
References: Science Links 9 (Rev. ed.) Rex Bookstore Publishing Company
Author: Aquino, M.D, Biong J.A., Custodio, M.V., Madriaga, E.A., (2020)

MAIN IDEA
Momentum is measured by multiplying mass and velocity while impulse is equal to the mass
times the acceleration. Impulse is defined as the product force acting on the object and the time
during which the force acts.

EXERCISE
Directions: Solve the following problems. Note, write the solutions.

1. A compact car with a mass 725 of kg, is moving at 100 km/h. Find its momentum
2. A 0.14 kg baseball is pitched horizontally at 38 m/s. after it is hit by a bat, it moves
horizontally at -38 m/s. How much impulse did the bat deliver to the ball?
3. How much force is needed to stop an object with a mass of 28kg moving horizontally
with a velocity of 11m/s for 24 seconds?

V. Transfer (Synchronous)

Activity Title: Anti-collision Device

Learning Target: Understand the importance of anti-collision devices and road safety
References: Science Links 9 (Rev. ed.) Rex Bookstore Publishing Company
Author: Aquino, M.D, Biong J.A., Custodio, M.V., Madriaga, E.A., (2020)
MAIN IDEA
Anti-collision devices are the devices that help to prevent from collisions like helmet, road signs,
and etc.
EXERCISE
Materials: Book, Laptop, Pc or cp
Directions: Create a slideshow presentation on anti-collision devices and road safety then explain
each anti-collision device the importance and its uses.
