Tbilissi

Tbilissi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia. 1.5 million people live there. Also, the
city's ancient name is Tiflis, and the name stayed this way in some languages. This city has
gained popularity and is now very famous. The money there is called the “lari” and it is
written “GEL”. 1 Euro is 3,06 Lari, so it’s very cheap.
Tbilisi has a humid subtropical climate and this means that in the summer it’s very warm and
in the winter, very cold. The average annual temperature in Tbilisi is 13.3 °C. July is the
hottest month according to some experiments.
There are a lot of various cultures in Tbilissi: there are more than 100 ethnic groups such as
Armenians, Russians, and Azerbaijanis. We can see these various cultures also by the
architecture: it’s a mix of many styles such as Art Nouveau, Beaux-Arts, or Neoclassical
style. So, if you know some words in Russian or in Georgian, you can maybe have a better
time there.
At Tbilissi there are also a lot of institutions and cultural ones. There are many theatres,
operas, and art museums but also radios and television and it shows this variety of cultures.

For a long time, in Georgia, they had a poor transport service and prioritized cars. Now, the
city has invested in developing a green public transport network. Today, she has an
international airport, metro and national rail services, municipal buses, minibusses, cabs,
cable cars, bike lanes, and a funicular. But, you might want to know that the bus station is
quite chaotic and somewhat unorganized. You might also find that fewer people speak
English so you not a lot of people will understand you if you talk in English.

The most positive point of this country is that it’s considered one of the most friendly
countries, where the people are very grateful for their wine and cuisine. There is even a
saying in Georgia that says that every guest is a gift from God.

Also, Georgians have always believed that their country is the place where wine was created
because they are very proud of their country. But, it was not the case.

Furthermore, even though, Georgians are very friendly that doesn’t mean they accept
everything. In Georgia, it is preferable not to say swear words. Most of the time, Georgians
are saying swear words to each other as a joke but if a foreigner does it, they can get angry.
When you hear Georgians talking, it can be hard to make a difference between an
aggressive argument from a random conversation.

Another thing not to do in Georgia is to talk about religion. Otherwise, they also can get
angry.

A good thing to know when you go there is that in Georgia, the wine does not have the same
taste. Indeed, the juices, along with grape skins and seeds, ferment in large clay vessels are
called qvevri. It’s not necessarily better or worse, just different. Also, most visitors are
surprised about how inexpensive the food is here – in restaurants, at fast-food joints, or in
the local shops.
