Wales is, a constituent unit of the


United Kingdom that forms a
westward extension of the island
of Great Britain. The capital and main
commercial and financial center is
Cardiff

Located within beautiful parklands at the


heart of the capital. At once a Roman fort,
Norman stronghold and Victorian Gothic
masterpiece, Cardiff Castle’s walls and fairy-
tale towers conceal 2,000 years of history.
The leek has been associated with Wales for hundreds of years. It is
thought that the patron saint of Wales, St David, told Welsh soldiers
to wear the leek on their helmets, so they could better spot each
other when in the battle against the Saxons who wore similar armor.

One of the more recent Welsh symbols, the daffodil,


became associated with Wales in the 19th century when it
started gaining popularity. By the 20th century, Prime
Minister David Lloyd George, who was himself a Welshman,
chose to wear one on St David’s Day.
Wales does indeed have more sheep than humans but at
the last count there were more than 10 million sheep,
according to the Business Wales page on the Welsh
Government website.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland, part of the United


Kingdom, lying in the northeastern
quadrant of the island of Ireland, on

Northern Ireland is sometimes referred
to as Ulster, although it includes
only six of the nine counties which
made up that historic Irish province.
The only official flag for Northern Ireland
is the Union Flag, the flag of the United
Kingdom; there is no official local flag that
represents only Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland was once home to a
giant named Finn McCool (also called
Fionn Mac Cumhaill)

Irish folk tales say that the Giant's Causeway


was created by giants moving these huge rocks,
these giants were Finn McCool and
Benandonner. Benandonner was a Scottish giant
who wanted to challenge Finn McCool to a fight.
It was said that Finn built the Giant's Causeway
so they could meet and do battle.
