ABSTRACT

As a Student who is about to enter new beginning as a work in progress on

becoming successful first there are factors that should be considered on

deciding the field that they are going to take, having said that; this study is

created to aid, support, and define the hindrances that students usually

encountered when taking and deciding a course to take in college.

The respondents and participants in this study are the Grade 12 Student in

the Arellano University Andres Bonifacio Campus under school year 2021-

2022. And found that the hindrances that the respondents faced are; financial

instability, parental wish, and indecision are the reason why they are facing

different hindrances on choosing the best college course that fits their

capabilities and become successful in the field that they will take. In conclusion

to the specific findings, there may be a lot of hindrances that these students

faced, but with the help of this study, they can rely on the recommendations

provided by the researchers.

And for the key recommendations of the research, the researchers gave

recommendations for the community, the legislative department of the

government, the local department units and barangay, the school

administration, to the parents, to the students and to the future researchers.

The researcher’s recommendations also serve to support information and

outcomes of the research conducted. Furthermore, a really good

recommendation discloses information about a researcher's experiences. The

recommendations presented in the research report are critical to help the

society and people to be more accepting and open to the topic of the research

intentions for moving the field of study ahead of us to follow while doing future

investigations.
CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents introduction, background of the study,

setting of the study, theoretical framework, conceptual framework,

statement of the problem, hypothesis, assumption, significance of

the study, scope and limitation and definition of terms.

Introduction

Education is a basic human necessity; even a child has the right to an

education. However, in recent years, education has become something of a

privilege rather than being welcoming to anybody who aspires to be the greatest

version of themselves and this is important for students who are going to start

college. Therefore, going to college is an investment so you have to think wisely

of your degree because this will determine what job you are going to have and

how much you are going to earn. Choosing the right course to take on at

college is one of the toughest decisions that the students are facing. They must

choose the right course they would take. According to Eremie and Okwulehie

(2018, factors such as environmental, opportunity and personality can influence

the choice of career among secondary school students. In terms of

environmental factors, it revealed that family, socioeconomic status and peer

groups have significant influence of the students’ choice of career while in

opportunity factors such as education and mentorship also had influence to the

choice of career as well as the personality factors such as the students’ interest,

values and skills in choosing their courses. That is why the researchers

conducted this study to help the students to be more confident to avoid

undecided decisions that are connected in college. And lastly, this research will

breakdown and summarize the hindrances of selected grade 12 students of

Arellano University-Andres Bonifacio Campus school year 2021-2022 on

choosing a right college course.

Background of the Study

Some of the senior high school students, most especially, grade 12

students, find some difficulties in choosing the right course and career path.

Students' college courses are a major choice to decide for future plans. This is

one of the biggest challenges and dilemmas in the life of every student. It

involves an interplay of many interlinked factors. This is not an easy task and

involves a complex decision-making process. This is not just a single issue, but

a universal one. Many students decide on their entire life, success and careers

for choosing a college or a major. There are many factors in considering a

course such as students’ character, location, costs, socio-economic status,

expectations of students, the size of the school, and so many others may differ

in weight when deciding on their course. The decision in choosing a college

course can affect the students for a lifetime. The study wants to show the

possible challenges that students might face when they go to college. The first

significant and common dilemma that is happening today, especially that the

nation is in the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic, is financial problems. Many

parents and students are now worried about getting a budget to pay for their

school expenses like tuition fees, school needs and essentials now that they

have lost their jobs which may cause a big impact on the parents' and students'

decision making when choosing courses to take in college. As students go to

college and meet new circle of friends, they can experience social issues.

Newcomers may encounter unhealthy friendships and romantic relationships

because of peers. Sometimes they also get confused on what program they will

take because their circle of friends is not with them. The influence of their peers

also has a significant impact on deciding on what course they really like.

Choosing a college course is the best part of a student’s life, but the problem is

that; sometimes parents are the ones who are deciding what course their

children should take. That is why the students cannot enjoy their college life

because they feel pressured towards their parents. The best way to enjoy your

life as a college student is to think practically. Think about something you like

and in demand at the same time

According to Lehigh University, “ There are many issues commonly

experienced by students in college that can sometimes pose major challenges

to study, play, socializing, and living. “ Andra Picincu of CHRON stated that

“Financial concerns, job uncertainty and fear of failure are all common

challenges that students face when choosing a career. Making a career choice
is a defining phase in every students’ life. Students have to consider several

factors before arriving at a decision. Education is universally recognized as the

answer to socio-economic problems of the world nations and individuals look up

to education to provide a cure for poverty, ignorance, drought, joblessness,

hunger and inadequate shelter among other things (JV Jane G. Ouano et al.

2019).According to the study of Kazi, Sharif and Ahmad (2017),” Financial

outcomes, ease of subject and future job opportunities were observed to have a

minor impact. The interest in the subject is also related and has some linkage

with personality type. Mismatch of the personality and lack of interest in the

subject is dangerous, and could end up with disastrous results in terms of

student dissatisfaction, demotivation, lack of productivity leading to increased

dropouts and career failure.” In the study of Kazi, Sharif and Ahmad, as

mentioned above, declares that students' career choices are also influenced by

their social class, financial resources, affordability, and future employability.

Due to the fact that students are not all fortunate to be granted full education,

financial instability affects students' choice of course as they will always

consider it for every decision to make.

Settings of the Study

This study took place at Arellano University Pasig during the September of

2021. Founded and conceptualized by the late Florentino Cayco, Sr., The first

Filipino Undersecretary of Public Instruction and illustrious educator. The

reputable institution of learning opened in 1938 called the Arellano Law College

founded in Manila, Philippines that was named after Cayetano Arellano, first
Filipino chief justice. Closed in December 1941 until March 1945 due to the

Japanese occupation and reopened in April 1945 renamed as Arellano

Colleges. In June 1946 Florentino Cayco, Sr., In 1946 Arellano Colleges was

recognized as the Arellano University by the Department of Education, Culture

and sports because of the remarkable effort and devotion of Florentino Cayco,

Sr. who became the first President of the Institution. At present the Arellano

University has seven successful campuses all over NCR.

Figure 1. Arellano University – Andres Bonifacio Campus

Arellano University provides a standard four-year legal degree and was one

of the well-known institutions at the time, catering to a large number of

outstanding persons in the fields of law and public service. As of 2021 a total of

142 passed the law board exam.

Theoretical Framework

The study of the influence of probable outcomes on the process and

consequences of decisions is known as risk theory. Students make course

selection choices with varying return expectations, but also with the impression

that such expectations will not be met. Risk Theory and Student Course

Selection by Dennis Zocco (2003) aims to present the findings of an empirical

analysis measuring the relative causes of risk perception in students considered

in selecting upcoming courses subject matter.

Students make decisions throughout their college career, and decision-

making is an important element in the learning process. F. Yates, Veinott, &

Patalano (2003) define a decision as “…a commitment to a course of action that

is intended to produce a satisfying state of affairs.” The course selection

decisions of students are among the most defining in the success of their

learning; the process takes many forms during a student's academic

experience. At the start of that journey, the student's course choices are limited

because mandatory courses prevail in the student's timetable. There is

considerable flexibility in course selection, however, because most necessary

courses are given in numerous sections and are typically taught by more than

one professor.

This theory is interconnected to the study because it identifies the risk that

students will face when they pick the course that is not in their field of interest,

risk theory aims to measure relative causes of risk in students selecting

upcoming courses they want to pursue, Return and risk are two interconnected

choice factors that must be considered together. All actions have consequences

that occur in the future, which is generally unknown, therefore few decisions are

risk-free. Decision-makers are believed to be risk averse in decision theory,

which means they strive to decrease the risk inherent in their decisions,

however some actions, such as purchasing a lottery ticket or participating in

games of chance with unfavorable odds, display risk-seeking tendencies, same

in picking the right course to take, it also comes with risk when making

decisions for college, it can either be good or bad.

Figure 1: Conceptual Framework

This study formulated the conceptual framework whereas, the demographic

profile of the respondents in terms of sex and socio-economic status; and college

course are the input, the survey and interview anre the process and the Program

Proposals to resolve hindrances in choosing college courses is the output.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to know the different hindrances on choosing the right course

to take on college faced by selected grade 12 HUMSS Students in Arellano

University Andres Bonifacio Campus school year 2021-2022. And aimed to answer

this following research questions:

1. What are the different hindrances that selected grade 12 HUMSS Students
faced when choosing a college course in terms of:

1.1 Sex; and

1.2 Socio-economic status?

2. Why the Students having a hard time deciding the course that they will take in

terms of:

2.1 Sex; and

2.2 Socio-economic status?

3. Do different hindrances affect their decision to continue college? And how that

decision will affect their lives after college in terms of:

3.1. Sex; and

3.2. Socio-economic status?

4. What will be the program proposals of the researchers to resolve hindrances in

choosing college courses.

Assumptions

The outcome of this study will help the students who are now facing different

hindrances on how to deal with it and how to overcome those, and to lessen the
hard time on deciding which course should they take.

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between sex and socio-economic status in

students’ chpice of college courses.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be a great benefit of the following:

To the Students. With the help of this research students will gain knowledge on

deciding the right course for college. Researchers will provide useful tips to be

able to navigate the right college course.

To the Parents. This study is significant for them because, sometimes the

Parents give so much pressure to their Child on what course they should take in

college and that is why this study signifies for them to be able to know that the

pressure they give has an overall impact on deciding for their Child's academic

success. Also, to be able to motivate, support and guide their children’s skills and

abilities in selecting the suitable course they wish to pursue in the future.

To the Society. This study is significant to them because society tends to make

standards that students should take on college it is all about the practicality on

taking the course that is in demand where Students can earn money rather than

the dream of the students where they can excel, that is why this study signifies to

them to give knowledge so that society will realize that those standards has a

huge impact on the process of deciding the right course that Students should

take.

To the future Researchers. The data gathered from this research study can

provide knowledge and give helpful information that can be used in future

reference will do in the future about this topic; choosing the right course to take on
college.

Scope, Limitation, and Delimitation

Arellano University-Andres Bonifacio Campus is the location of this study

focused on academic HUMSS strand specifically on the twelfth grade with the

total population of seven hundred ninety three (793), but in this study it is

conducted among selected grade 12 HUMSS Students for school year 2021-2022

. In each sections of grade 12 HUMSS, the researchers accumulated six (6)

students in seventeen (17) sections and this has the total number of one hundred

two (102) as the number of students that will answer the survey questions to

determine the different hindrances that the respondents faced on choosing the

course that will going to take on college. And this study is only limited to the one

hundred two (102) selected grade 12 HUMSS Students od Arellano University

Andres Bonifacio Campus school year 2021-2022.

Definition of Terms

For clearer understanding of the terms used in the study, the following are

defined operationally as terms are defined as something stated in terms of the

activities that could be employed to observe and measure it (procedures, actions,

or processes):

Hindrances. This term refers to the state of being interfered with, held back.

Holistic. This term refers to the relating to or concerned with

CHAPTER II

In this part of the research it will present datas, information, conclusions,

and add up ideas from past local and foreign literature as well as studies

that helped the researchers on providing new ideas for the readers on the

hindrances that grade 12 Students in Arellano University-Andres Bonifacio

Campus S.Y 2021-2022 faced on choosing the right course to take on college.

Local Literature

According to Dangoy and Madrigal (2020), the adolescent stage is

considered one of the challenging stages in human development. A stage

where a student is planning and preparing himself for a role, he would like to

take part in the community by taking his desired course or job to uplift his

dignity as a person.” Making a career selection is certainly one of the most

stressful and demanding aspects of any student's life. As students’ progress

through college, correctly selecting a job has a significant influence on their

future work life. In certain cases, changing courses may be the result of making

the wrong option while choosing a job, resulting in a loss of time, money, and

career dissatisfaction. The article examined the degree of job preferences and

the number of variables influencing career choices of senior high school

students at a Catholic school in Antique. Similarly, it matched the students'

characteristics to their job interests and factors influencing career choices. It

also connected job preferences and the impact of variables on career choices.

In the same source; the Researchers explicitly stated that; Career decision
making is undoubtedly one of the most difficult and challenging in any students'

life. As students continue to college, wisely choosing a career greatly impacts

their future career life. For some instances, changing courses could be a cause

of making the wrong decision in choosing a career that could lead to a waste of

time, resources, and career frustration. The study proved that taking a college

course that is not fit for the student's capabilities can make a huge impact for its

academic success moreover. It also stated that choosing the best course for the

students is one of the challenging stages for any learner that needs to be wise

in making a decision for themselves. This literature is interconnected to the

study conducted by the researchers because it explicitly stated that there are

different factors affecting students decision for college course like; taking a

course that is not suitable for the students' capabilities or choice that might

affect its academic performance resulting to a career dissatisfaction in the work

field and somehow it is also the problem that the subject of this research faced;

deciding for a college course is the most stressful part of being a students

because of considering factors like practicability, dreams, parental wish, and the

pressure that society tend to give.

Moreover, Manapsal (2018), agreed that there are different factors that

affect a student’s decision in making career choices. One of which is Family-

related factors. It is also stated in the study’s introduction that parents can be

the reason why some student’s feel and experience pressure in choosing and

taking courses in college. Picking a college course is one of the biggest and

most challenging decisions your child will ever make.

In making decisions, it cannot be denied that parents, most of the time,

want to have a say on what is the “ right”, “best”, or “most practical course”

Celine Carpio (2018). Parents that have so much control towards their child’s

choice and dreams may affect the child's performance. It can be the result of

failing grades and low academic performance, pressure, and shifting of

courses.

So, the literature that is given is relevant to the study because it simply

showed that parents will be one of the hindrances for some students in picking

a specific course because of the pressure they might get from their respective

parents. The child may feel less motivated and possibly be the result of having

bad academic performance and rebellion.

Local Studies

Based on the research of Ouano, et al (2019), Factors Affecting the

Decision of Graduating High School Students in Choosing a College-Course, it

stated that students select courses based on how productive they are and

whether or not they are required in the industry. High-paying occupations are

also taken into account when picking courses. Students, on the other hand,

have misconceptions about professions as a result of a lack of information,

which inhibits them from choosing them. Aside from picking a major course for

college, it eventually leads students to a high-paying career, which is inversely

connected with students' sense of belonging, other motivations for choosing a

major are positively related to a sense of belonging.

To relate this study to the research it explains how lack of information about

the profession can be a hindrance in picking the right course for college, having
misconceptions about the certain profession that the students’ wants to pick

discourages them, because we live in a society that has a stigma wherein when

the students pick a job that is not a high paying occupation it’s considered as a

waste of time and effort and the students feel the pressure to pick the course so

that they can feel the sense of belonging.

Factors Affecting the Decision of Graduating High School Students in

Choosing a College-Course. (2016, Nov 08). Retrieved from

https://graduateway.com/factors- affecting-the-decision-of-graduating-high-

school-students-in-choosing-a-college-course/ their gathered data showed the

preference courses to take in college. The study concluded that 16.2% would

like their course to be Accountancy, 4.7% for Criminology, 19.4% liked

Marketing Management, while 17.8% are inclined to Engineering and 41.9% for

Hotel and Restaurant Management.

This study is interconnected to this research because students should

know their capabilities that can help them on deciding what course on college

they should take rather than relying on what other people say or think about the

course they prefer.

Local Studies

According to Ouano, et al (2019), students select their college courses

based on their anticipated outcomes. Students select courses based on how

productive they are and whether or not they are required in the industry.
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This chapter presents the method of research to be utilized, the

respondents of the research, and the sampling technique. This part of research

shows the method used in the study, respondents of the research, and

sampling technique that helped the researchers on collecting data.

Methods of the Research

In using a method in collecting data there are factors that should be

considered like; the purpose and the aim of the study. That is why in this

research, the researchers used the descriptive method in order to answer the

hindrances that grade 12 students in Arellano University faced on choosing the

right course to take on in college. Because According to (Glass and Hopkins,

1984); In descriptive research, we gather data that describes the events then

organizes, tabulates, depicts, and describes the data collection. That is why the

researchers used descriptive as a method to answer the question; what are the

hindrances that those students faced in choosing the right course to take on

college. In addition, according to (Leedy and Ormrod, 2001), the descriptive

research technique is a fundamental research method that looks at the situation

as it is right now. Descriptive research entails identifying characteristics of a

phenomenon based on observation or investigating the relationship between

two or more occurrences. The goal of descriptive when it comes to a specific

group of people research is to describe, explain, or validate some form of

hypothesis or objective.
Respondents of the Research

The respondents of this research are the selected Grade 12 students from

Arellano University. These respondents can be flexible from different strands of

Grade 12 at Arellano University, Accountancy, Business and Management

(ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), General Academics (GAS),

Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM), also can be from the

Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track; Home Economics, Industrial Arts

and Information and Communication Technology. They were chosen based on

the criteria that the researchers used. The criteria consist of Grade 12 students

enrolled in Arellano University – Andres Bonifacio Campus of the school year

2021-2022, ages 17- 19 years old because this is the average age of the Grade

12 students, had an experience in difficulties in choosing a college course and

is willing to partake in the study.

Sampling Technique

In every research there should be a technique in order to have a solid

conclusion of the topic, in this research the researchers used purposive

sampling or also known as "judgmental or subjective" which the researchers

rely on their own judgment when choosing the population to participate in their

survey, the researchers used purposive because the respondents and the
subject of the research are provided on the topic which is the grade 12 students

of Arellano University Andres Bonifacio Campus.

Research Instruments

According to Fink (2003), the author explicitly stated that a survey is a

system for collecting information from or about people to describe, compare, or

explain their knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. That is why in this research,

the researchers used a survey as a form of collecting datas about the

hindrances that grade 12 students in Arellano University Andres Bonifacio

Campus S.Y 2021-2022 faced choosing the right course to take on college.

Moreover, surveys as an instrument helped the researchers to find the reason

why those students are having a hard time deciding for a college course to

take.

Data Gathering Procedure

The Researchers exerted their time, effort, and cooperation in developing

survey questionnaires to serve its intended respondents. The survey was

created using appropriate questions that are related to the statement of the

problem and individual questions generated by the researchers. The

questionnaires are made via google forms

and will be distributed using messenger and other social media platforms, since

we are still limited to go outside. Most of the questions are easy to answer since

the researchers have given the respondents enough choices that fits in their
situation. After the validation, the questions will be answered by 50 respondents

from Grade 12 students of Arellano University Andres Bonifacio Campus S.Y

2021-2022.

The Researchers gathered data with the use of a survey guide

questionnaire containing seven questions that was interconnected to the study

which is The Hindrances of the Grade-12 students in Arellano University

Andres Bonifacio Campus S.Y 2021-2022 faced in choosing the right course to

take on college. The Researchers considered different points of views of the

respondents.

Validation of Instruments

To test the validity of the research instrument; the questionnaire was

proofread by Ms. Monica E. Millamina, A licensed English Teacher and A

practical research 2 Adviser From Arellano University – Andres Bonifacio

Campus for modification and improvement. After some modifications,

questionnaires were produced in their final form.

Statistical Treatment of Data

Statistical Treatment of data plays an important role in research in order to

help the researchers on collecting, tabulating, analyzing, and interpreting data

in a numerical form given by the respondents of the research.

In this quantitative research, the researchers used Frequency and

Percentage; its purpose is to classify the respondents according to different

questions asked on the survey questions provided by the researchers. As a

formula, the researchers used this in order to acknowledge the percentage of

grade 12 students in Arellano University- Andres Bonifacio Campus S.Y 2021-

2022 that faced different hindrances on choosing a college course to take and

to have a conclusion on how many students are having a hard time on the

process of making a decision.

1. Frequency and Percentage Distribution

Frequency and Percentage distribution is a display of data that identifies

the percentage of observation that is taken from each answer from every data

collected.

Formula:

Where:

P = Percentage (%) F = Frequency

N = Number of respondents

Percentage is one of the most used methods to portray statistics,

percentage simply means "per hundred," and the sign for percentage is

percent. One percent (or 1%) is one hundredth of the whole or entire number

and is computed by dividing the total or whole number by one hundred (100).

The frequency of each response will be determined on the number of

respondents who will choose an answer in the choices given in specific

questions. Then divided by the number of respondents which has a total of fifty

(50) and after that, multiply by 100 to get the percentage to each question.
CHAPTER IV
PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

In this part of the research, it will present the presentation, analysis, and

interpretation of data from the respondents. And it will present the significance

of responses to the study.

The table connected to the demographic profile of respondents in terms of

age. The table explicitly shows that the majority of the gathered respondents

are 17 years of age with the percentage of sixty six (66%) followed by age of

eighteen (18) that has the percent of twenty-six (26%) and the respondents of

nineteen (19) years of age are 6 percent and the minority of the respondents

are sixteen (16) years old with the percent of two (2%).

Based on the data gathered, the table shows that most of the students

who experience different kinds of hindrances on choosing a college course are

the people ages 17 years old because these students are in their most
vulnerable state and they can feel easily overwhelmed in things that involves

decision making and somehow they are the people who will face college life

shortly.

In table two it presented the things that made the respondents hesitant to

pursue or even to attend college courses in the future. The majority of the

respondents answered that; they know that their family cannot afford the course

until graduation with the percentage of forty-eight (48%), followed by the

respondents who answered it is not the course they preferred got 32 as their

percentage, and the minority in this table are twenty (20%) percent or the

respondents who answered it is their parents wish to pursue a college course

since it follows their career is the things that make the respondents pursue a

college course.

Based on the data gathered it simply shows that most of the respondents
are hesitant on pursuing a college course because they are having a hard time

or experiencing financial instability as the reason why they are having a hard

time deciding which college course they will take that can fit their financial state.
CHAPTER V
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

In this part of the research it will present the Summary of Findings,

Conclusion, and Recommendations.

Summary of Findings

In this part of the research, it presents the summary of outcomes from the

conducted survey, as well as the best outcomes of the influence and the

certainty of the evidence for each result.

1. Demographic of the respondents

Based on the outcome, in terms of age, the majority of the students are

seventeen (17) years old with the percentage of 66%, followed by eighteen (18)

years old with the percentage of twenty-six (26%), followed by nineteen (19)

years old with the percentage of six (6%) and lastly sixteen (16) years old with

the percentage of two (2%).

2. Cause on why students being hesitant to attend college

Based on the outcome of the things that makes the student hesitant to

pursue or attend the course they want, the study showed that financial

problems are still the main cause with the percentage of 40%, the students said

that they know that their family can’t afford the course that they want to take,

followed by the course they don’t prefer with the

percentage of 32%, lastly the parental wish with 20%. This study shows that

most of the students would rather pick a different course that fits their family’s

financial state.

3. The reason why the students face hindrances in choosing a college

course.

Based on the outcome of the reason why some students face hindrances

on choosing a college course, the study showed that financial problem has the

highest rate with the percentage of 56%, this is followed by the Considering

other decision with the percentage of 12%, followed by indecision with the

percentage of 8%, followed by Pressure from sudden responsibilities with 22%,

and lastly Mental and physical health with the percentage of 2%. This shows

that most students' financial difficulties can have a direct impact on a student’s

cognitive performance. The study links poverty to low mental capabilities and

indicates that financial stress impacts a poor person's IQ more than it does a

well-off person.

The hindrances that the students face when choosing the course they

want to pursue.

The majority of the respondents considered practicality as one of the major

hindrances being experienced when deciding for the course to take in college

with the percentage of fifty-six (56%), This is followed by Financial Instability

which got 34%, followed by peer pressure with the percentage of 6%, and the

least voted in this table is parental wish with the percentage of 4%.
4. The factors that the students consider as a hindrance on choosing the

college course they want.

In table five it is about agreeing or not; considering financial instability,

parental wish, and sudden responsibilities as the hindrances because some

students choose a practical college course. The majority of respondents agree

with 66 percent response rate, followed by those who strongly agree with thirty-

two (32%) response rate and those who disagree with 2%.

In this table shows the data gathered in the statement. It shows the

possible outcome if the students get overpowered by the hindrances

experience when choosing a college course which has the weighted mean of

2.64 which means they extremely agree.

This table shows the data all about determining the possible outcome after

college. Majority of the respondents answered that shifting into another

program if plans did not go well as expected ranged 60 percent out of one

hundred.

Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, the following

conclusions are drawn:

1. Students at the age of seventeen (17) years old are mostly the one who

experienced different kinds of hindrances in choosing a course in college.

Most of the students were hesitant to pursue their college course because of

their financial state.

2. The cause why some students face hindrance in choosing a college course

is because of their financial problem. Practicality of the students when

choosing a course in college to gain more money to support their families.

3. Avoiding to be overpowered by pressure to choose and continue the

desired course in college. The importance of having a set of goals, plans

and vision before and after entering college will help the students to be a

successful person someday.

4. The reason why the respondents find some difficulty in choosing a college

course for them is because of many factors that are running through their

head most likely about financial problems, parental wishes, peer pressure,

pressure from sudden responsibilities, and social pressure. When students

decide on a college course, they should know and be aware of what or how

a course could benefit them in the long run. There are many advantages

and disadvantages when deciding a suitable college course.

Recommendations

The given sectors of the community listed below will benefit from the

recommendations made by the researchers on eliminating the hindrances faced

by grade 12 students on deciding a college course.

1. The Community. Raising a social campaign about the importance of self-

discipline and to others in general so that they cannot contribute to the

pressure that students face on deciding a college course. Also, to raise the

dilemmas of the students to higher officials, so that they can offer and give

help that will benefit the students for the development of the community.
2. Proposed programs that will help students to be motivated and will be able

to help them finish their degree. Also programs that will help them to have

the chance to study, like scholarships and financial support. In addition,

conducting seminars like; career opportunities that they might get into after

they pursue college degree.

3. To avoid pressures among students, the researchers encourage the

parents to support their child not just financially, but even mentally,

physically, and emotionally through parenting seminars. And also to

motivate and cheer their children until they become successful in life.

Moreover, allowing the parents to know the struggles of their child by

practicing peer to peer connection or building a stronger connection with

each other.

4. The researchers suggest some school activities to let their students not to

stop from believing, dreaming, and reaching their goals like giving them a

free concert twice for the whole school year or a free online consultation

with the guidance personnel.
